Let us begin!
Activity 1: Be a philosopher.

Instructions: Before we dig in, let us find out how much you already know about the self by going
through the following questions. Please answer as honestly as you can. For completing this
activity, you will get 10 points.
1. What is a “soul”? What is the relation of your “soul” to your “body”? What happens to the
“soul” when the body dies?
-The soul is our mind, our emotions, and our will. It’s who we are as human beings.
-In living composites, the soul is the substantial form of the body. Soul is United to the body
That through it the body receives and possesses subsistence and life. The union of soul
and body doesn’t, then mean confusion of the two, but requires only that they complete
each other.
-It leaves the body, it goes straight to it’s new destination where rebirth takes place.

2. Describe an experience where your mind prevailed over your heart and desire?

When I was in my freshman year in high school, I had a huge crush on this good-looking
guy. I had decided not to follow my heart. Since my mind had told me that he was out of
my league, I did not confess my feelings to him. I later discovered that he too had feelings
for me and I regretted a ton.

3. How do you know that you exist?

Descartes' I think therefore I am does not prove existence. Am I right?

It means that the only thing that you can absolutely know to exist is yourself. Everything
could be a fabrication in your mind. But the only thing to be certain about is that you
exist, because you have self realization by thinking

To my future self, you don't have to worry about your future because I'm studying hard for
your diploma. I want you to remember that you were studying hard, sometimes stressful
but it was paid off, because in the future, you'll be grateful for your effort. Sometimes you
feel exhausted, depressed even hopeless but everything is going to be fine, just hang in
there.

Activity 2: I am a philosopher

Instructions: Now that you have explored the many definition and ideas of the “self”, try to answer
the following questions honestly.
1. What is the “self” according to the following philosopher? (2.5 pts. each)

a. Socrates

According to Socrates, our true self is our soul. I understand myself by what by
means not to be over-confident with what we have right now instead focus on
your inside, on what your mind tell and what we feel about.

b. Plato

Plato said that the true self of human beings is the reason or intellect that
constitutes their soul and that is separable from their body. True enough because
I know that all things have an end. It’s not our own life, we just borrow it from
above. Our souls gives life to our body and we can't control it because it can

separate anytime.

c. Descartes

Descartes’ believed that mind is the set of our consciousness. I understand that
myself in in what he said by the means of it can control our body and t has a
large impact to our decisions and doings. Without our mind we have no sense of
self.

d. Locke

John Lock considered personal identity or the self to be founded in

consciousness or memory. In my own understanding memory abides in our mind
not always clear but still keep. It can give us consciousness and it can bring us
to our outer space (not literally).

e. Hume

Hume suggests that self is just a bundle of perception, like a links in a chain. I
understand myself by this philosopher by this philosopher that my attitude or my
outcome behavior is based on my environment. Natural habit of attributing
unified existence in my associated parts. Maybe it comes naturally in what does
your society are.

f. Kant

According to him, we all have an inner self which together form on our
consciousness. I understand myself in this perception by knowing that we have
outside and inside thoughts.

2. How have the views of the different thinkers you have studies influenced your understanding
