I want to apply for this program, at VIU, because it offers on-the-job training that also involves the
construction of real-life projects. Whereas BCIT’s program does not offer co-op. It is one of only two
programs in the province that send its students to build real houses. This kind of hands-on learning will
certainly help me learn all the basics and apply them to real projects; progressing on to higher levels of
carpentry training will be much easier due to this. This is certainly one of the best options I have, as I
plan on achieving the red seal in this trade.

UVIC is not a bad option for Civil Engineering. However, Costs would be significantly higher
because of housing issues. That and also I am hesitant because it is so far away from friends and family.
Contrary to BCIT which is relatively close; to driving or commuting distance. I prefer to be enrolled in
BCIT’s program rather than UVIC’s because both offer hands-on learning but BCIT’s program is up a
notch. They are taught by Industry leaders. Immersive, learning with applied real-world solutions. This
means that I will be working with potential future employers, fast-tracking my career. BCIT also has an
astounding 97% employment rate for degree graduates which is something that I want to be a part of.
Largely due to the fact that employers know that BCIT graduates are well adept at real-world problems
and are definitely good employees to have in a team.
