PENGUINS

WHERE DO PENGUINS LIVE?

You can find penguins on every continent, however all known species of penguins live inthe

southern hemisphere .
WHAT DOES THE PENGUINS EAT?

Penguins are carnivorous animals, which feed on shellfish and fish such as:
• Plankon.
• Crustaceans.
• Fishes.
• Squid.

• Other cephalopods

WHY CAN NOT THE PENGUINS FLY?

THEY CAN NOT FLY. THEY HAVEN’T GOT WINGS FOR FLIGHT
It is believed that evolution, due to a lack of land predators, caused penguins to change
their wings for flippers.

It was also a consequence of the fact that penguins had to search for food in the ocean
and the wings were difficult to use underwater, so they evolved flippers, which help them
swim and make them very agile in the water.

During this transition, they became more adapted to marine life, trading in the hollow
bones needed for flight for hard bones better in the water.
WHAT ARE BABY PENGUINS LIKE?

They can mature and reproduce when they are 4 to 8 years old.

In general, the smaller species of penguins mature at an earlier age than the larger ones, however,
the smaller ones also seem to have much shorter lives.

HOW DO PENGUINS COMMUNICATE?

They communicate through a wide variety of different sounds.

Penguins are social animals, regardless of the species it seems that they are always communicating.
They have ways of communicating for fun, protection, and even when it comes to the mating
process.

WHAT ANIMALS EAT PENGUINS?

The main threats to penguins in the water are leopard seals, seals, sea lions, sharks and killer
whales.

HOW DO PENGUINS KEEP THEMSELVES WARM?

IT IS THEIR PLUMAGE AND BELOW IT, THEY HAVE A LAYER OF SUBDERMAL FAT
THAT KEEPS THEM WARM

The first line of defense that keeps penguins warm is their plumage, which provides 80 to 90%
insulation.
Below the feathers they have a layer of subdermal fat with a thickness of up to 3 cm.
Finally, penguins have a sophisticated internal mechanism capable of regulating their body
temperature.

HOW MANY SONS DO PENGUINS HAVE?

In general, the penguin is a bird that lays a maximum of 2 eggs (some species such as the King
Penguin only lay one), a few days apart, so their hatching is not simultaneous.
WHAT MAKES THEM SO IMPORTANT?

If they disappeared there would be an imbalance in the chains of other species.

Penguins play a key role in the food chain, both as predators and as prey; if these disappeared there
would be an imbalance in the chains of other marine species that could also disappear.

HOW MANY PARTNERS DO PENGUINS HAVE?

Penguins choose a mate for life

Despite always being in a group, penguins choose a partner for life, which is why it is believed that
these animals are a symbol of romanticism because they are monogamous, and have a special ritual
to make their partner fall in love.
