The bar graph provides data on the proportion of four different recyclable materials which were
collected in a Canadian province in three years, 2000, 2010 and 2020.

During the 20-year period the percentage of recycled metal declined significantly while plastic
increased greatly to become the most recycled product. The levels of glass and paper waste remained
relatively stable throughout.

Metal and paper were the most popular recycled products in 2000 at 30%. These were followed by
glass (25%) and plastic which made up only 15%.

By 2010, plastic had increased sharply to 25%, making it the second largest category after paper which
had fallen slightly to 27%. Glass remained at the same level (25%) while metal had decreased to 22%,
becoming the least recycled material in this year.

The levels of recycling in 2020 were vastly different to those in 2000. Plastic dominated the waste
composition with 35% and was followed by paper which had returned to its 2000 level (30%). Glass
remained at 25% but metal fell again to comprise only 10% of all the recycled materials.
