GE PROBLEMS

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING

1. Two hills D and F have elevations of 600 m and 800 m respectively. In between D and F is another hill E which
has an elevation of 720 m and is located at 12 km from D and 10km from F.

a. determine whether station F is visible from D

b. If not what height of tower must be constructed at F so that it could be visible from D with the line of sight
having a clearance of 2m above hill E.

2. A differential levelling was run from BM1 to BM2 which is approximately 4200 m from each other and closing
the circuit on the same route. The elevation of BM1 is 100 m above sea level and that of BM2 was found out to
have an elevation of 142.53 m above sea level. However in closing the circuit the computed elevation of BM1
was 99.96 m only. What is the corrected elevation of BM2? Supposing the computed elevation of BM1 is 100.06
m. What is the corrected elevation of BM2?

3. A line of levels 6 kms long is run between BM No.1 and BM No.2 with average BS and FS distances of 110 m.
The average BS reading is 3.4 m and every time it is taken , the rod is inclined to the side, from the vertical by 4
degrees. What should be the corrected elevation of BM No. 2 if its record elevation is 100.00m?

4. The bearing of a line from A to B was measured as S 16 deg.30’W. It was found that there was local attraction
at both A and B and therefore a forward and a backward bearing were taken between A at a point C at which
there was no local attraction. If the bearing of AC was S 30 deg. 10’E and that of CA was N 28 deg. 20’W, what is
the corrected bearing of AB?

5. In order to determine the elevation of a point B on top of a cliff, a transit having an index error of +03’ was set
over a point A, the elevation of which was known to be 45.50 m and the height of the traverse axis of the
instrument was 1.5 m and when the horizontal wire was sighted on B, the vertical limb reads +16 deg 30’. The
instrument was then transferred to point C at a horizontal distance of 60 m from A towards B. A,B, and C lie on
the same vertical plane. The vertical limb was found to be +26 deg 30’ to point B. finally with the telescope
horizontal, the reading on a level rod held on A was 2.34m. Find the elevation of B.

6. In topographic survey, three triangulation stations A,B,C and C are sighted from a point P the distance
between the stations are AB=500 m., BC=350 m and CA=450 m. At point P the angle subtending AC is 45 deg
while for BC is 30 deg. If the azimuth of AC is due North, find the azimuth and distance PA.

7. in a close traverse ABCDE, AB has a bearing of S 30 W and is 500 m long; CB has a bearing of N 5 deg 04’ W
and is 720 m. long; CD has a departure of 592.00 m west and no latitude; DE is 800 m long and EA has a bearing
of N 20 E. Find the bearings of CD and DE and length of EA.

8. What are the characteristics of properties of contours?
