I. Solve the following problems:

1. Assume that the aircraft was flying at an altitude of 1500 m above the datum taking vertical
photographs with a 305 mm focal length camera. Two image points a and b (of A and B on the ground) were
depicted on a photograph and their photo coordinates were measured to be Xₐ = 65.3mm Yₐ=71.5 mm, Xь=-
29.5 mm and Yь= -52.3 mm. If point A is 163 m and point B is 198 m above datum, what is the horizontal
distance on the ground between A and B?

2. Assume that two road intersections shown on a photograph can be located on a 1:20000 scale
topographic map. The measured distance between the intersections are 48.5 mm on the map and 89.4 mm on
the photograph. What is the scale of the photograph? And at that scale, what is the length of a fence line that
measures 44.8 mm on the photograph?

3. An average photo scale of 1:20000 is required of vertical photos. What air base is required to achieve
77% end lap if the camera has a 10 in square format. Determine also the spacing between adjacent flight lines
to achieve 50% side lap.

4. The image of a point whose elevation is 1456ft above datum appears 65.67 mm from the principal
point to the top of object of a vertical photographs taken from a flying height of 7000 ft above datum. What
would be the distance from the principal point be if the point is at datum?

5. The distance between the focal intersection on a vertical photograph is 6.41 in. The same distance on a
map with a scale of 1:25000 measures 4 in. The elevation of the level portion in the area is 1200 ft above sea
level. What was the altitude of the aircraft above sea level when the photograph was taken? The focal length of
the camera used was 6 in.

6. Assume that the optical axis of a camera was 3 degrees from the vertical when taking a photograph with
a 152.4 mm focal length. What will the distance between the nadir and photo center be on the photograph.
What is the corresponding distance on the ground if the aircraft were flying at 3500 m above the datum?
