FUNDAMENTALS OF SURVEYING
FIELD WORK #3
October 22, 2022
Traverse Angle Measurements and
Closure Computations
I. Description:
Utilizing the Horizontal Circle of a Total Station along the Trunnion Axis to
find the interior angles of a close traverse area, the distance between each
points, and the area using one of the four methods of Area Computation.

II. Equipment:
Total Station, Tripod, Chalk, and Staff w/ Prism

III. Purpose:
To demonstrate to the class how to set up and operate a Total station and
determine the distance and interior angles of a close traverse area with
obstructions.
To then determine the Area of the close traverse using the Area
computation methods.

IV. Procedure:
1. Determine the area to perform a close traverse (In this class case, the
road surrounding the USTP Gymnasium).
2. Group yourselves to designate the points or vertices around the road
of the Gymnasium and marked it.
3. Set up the Total Station and using the laser, pinpoint the vertices the
mark on the road to give accurate reading.
4. First point to be set up is Point A. Next one would B, C, D, E and so on.
5. After set up, Sight the left point using the staff with prism. Set the
bearings of the Total Station to zero, and then sight the next point to the
right. This would be the interior angle of the Point where the instrument is
set up.
6. Click Dist on the total station, and Measure the distance after
measuring the interior angle. This would be the distance of the Point being
set up, and the point to the right.
7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 on each points.

VIII. Conclusion:
To conclude, the data gathered during our third field work for a close
traverse (road surrounding the USTP Gymnasium ) survey has a total
area of 8243.012 m^2
