Varicose veins are enlarged, swollen, and twisting veins, often appearing blue or
dark purple. They happen when faulty valves in the veins allow blood to flow in
the wrong direction or to pool, and mostly it affects the lower limbs.
Varicose veins (duawli) are enlarged, swollen, tortuous and twisting veins mostly
of lower limbs. this occurs due to the incompetence of blood or disturbed flow of
blood via valves in the veins allowing blood to flow in the opposite directions.
more than 30 percent of people suffer from varicose veins. Varicose veins are
dilated, tortuous and elongated superficial veins of the lower limb, dawali
(varicose veins) is one of the commonest categories of primary venous
insufficiency.

Two types of varicose veins

● Primary varicose veins

 ● Secondary varicose veins

Usually, it occurs due to the weakness in the venous wall and is usually
hereditary in nature. As per unani physicians/ greek physicians, khilt-e-sauda
(black bile) and balgham (phlegm) are responsible for the generation of this
disease.

Risk factors for varicose veins include family history, age, and pregnancy a
possible risk factor is long-standing.

Other venous related risks venous eczema, venous pigmentation,

lipodermatosclerosis, and venous ulceration are complications associated with
varicose veins which are painful and distressing conditions for the patient and
increase the financial burden to the patient and huge out of the pocket
expenditure.
