the past and present, with emphasis on
a)the Powhatan of the Eastern Woodlands;
b)the Lakota of the Plains; and
c)the Pueblo peoples of the Southwest
Objective(s): Students will be identify Native American Indians
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Processes: The student will understand that the American Indian
peoples have lived in Virginia and in other regions of America for thousands of years. American
Indians developed different cultures because they lived in different environments of North America.
American Indians have made contributions to life in American and continue to make contributions in
the present day.
Teacher Materials: textbook, promethean board, computer
Student Materials (Technology): textbook, worksheet, pencil, color pencils, crayons, scissors, and
glue
Procedures/Activities:
Exploratory Introduction (Before): TTW introduce students to chapter 3 of text book “The American
Indians”. TSW define the words to know; culture: the beliefs, customs, and way of life of a group
people; environment: our surroundings, including land, water, and climate.
Development (During): TSW will identify the contributions of the American Indians to life today.
TSW watch a YouTube virtual field trip of the Native American heritage

Expansion (After) Guided Practice: TSW identify and locate the regions of the Powhatan, the
Lakota, and the Pueblo Indians on the United States map (cut and paste activity).

Question 2: Describe the homes in which the Powhatan Indians lived? Longhouses

Question 4: How did the Pueblo people get their food? Farming and hunting
Exit ticket Question: Name the three American Indians tribes and what region of the United States
they lived? Powhatan (Eastern Woodland), Lakota (Great Plain), and Pueblo(Southwest)
Differentiation techniques used:
Tier 1 and tier 2 students will work independently locating the regions of the American Indians on the
United States map
Tier 3 and special students will work in a group, along with paraprofessionals to identify and locate the
regions of the American Indians on the United States map.
