4 MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES

4.1 INTERJET DAILY CONTENT LOADING

The interjet i2000 system is configured to accept daily or topical content loaded to the system
from the VCC USB ports. When a properly configured USB storage device containing the
desired content, is inserted into one of the VCC USB ports, the system will *automatically detect
and load the dynamic content inventory list and content to the DSUAM6-12. Once loaded to the
server the content will be automatically installed and may be selected for passenger viewing via
the VA Select window on the VA iCMT screen. The system may contain multiple dynamic
content inventory lists allowing “Morning” and “Evening” news as required.
*NOTE: THE USB DEVICE WILL ONLY BE DETECTED WHEN THE iCMT IS DISPLAYING THE “WELCOME”
SCREEN OR IS IN “MAINTENANCE” MODE.

Upon inserting the USB device the iCMT provides a load progress indicator to allow the
operator to verify that content is loading. In addition a Warning Message window will display
any instructions or warnings to the operator. The iCMT progress indicator may be minimized
and the iCMT may be used to control other system functions during the load.

Should the USB device be removed before all files are loaded the system will resume transfer of
content when the device is re-inserted. When resuming transfer of partially completed files, the
system will resume at the byte position at which it left off.

Figure 4-1 depicts the USB Load Status screen on the iCMT.

4.2 CONTENT LOADING OVERVIEW – ALL TOPSERIES SYSTEMS

The TopSeries system provides broadcast and AVOD entertainment using two types of digital servers; a
broadcast server (DSU-AM6-12) and interactive server (DSU-D2). A typical installation supporting
AVOD will use one DSU-AM6-12 and from two to 12 DSU-D2s. Content must be loaded onto these
servers in a flexible, quick, simple, and error-free process. These goals are accomplished in the following
manner:

Flexibility – the content loading process does not depend on one particular type of loader device. The
simplest load device is a portable computer that can be brought on-board and connected to the system
(Portable Data Loader). Alternatives such as a high performance portable server, permanent Loader
DSU-D2, and server with removable hard disk drive have also been proposed. In all circumstances, the
basic content loading process is the same.

Quick – speed of loading is addressed by providing a variety of loader options with different performance
and attention requirements. The content loading process has been designed to permit the removal of a
loader as soon as the content has been loaded anywhere in the system. The loading process also
prioritizes the transfer of content from the loader to the system minimizing this time.

Simplicity – physically connecting a portable loader is nothing more than connecting power and network
cables and turning the server on. Connecting a permanent mounted loader is nothing more than inserting
the replacement device (DSU-D2 or removable hard disk drive) and turning the device back on. Typical
management of the process is performed in accordance with the processes described herein.

Error-free – determining what content is required, how it is to be distributed, verification of the integrity
of the content, and installing the content information into the appropriate databases are all automatic
processes performed by the system once an operator has identified the desired Content Inventory List
(CIL).

4.2.1 Terminology

Key terms used in describing the content loading process are defined as follows:
• Content Download – the process of transferring content from a carry-on loader (like a Portable
Data Loader or PDL) to the system. One copy of each required content item is transferred from
the loader to one of the system servers. Once one copy has been transferred, the carry-on loader
can be disconnected and removed, as the content will be distributed to the required servers using
the Content Crossload process.
• Content Crossload – the process of distributing content between multiple system servers. The
Content Inventory List (CIL) specifies the content that is desired in each system server. Content
crossload uses the CIL to determine the content each server needs and manages the server-to-
server transfer (crossload) of this content.
• Content Inventory List – an ASCII text file that defines the content that is desired in each system
server.

interjet A320 i2000 Line Maintenance Training Manual

• Active Content – the system supports the loading of more content than is currently to be used by
the system. To accomplish this, each content entry in the CIL contains a “scope” field that
specifies the parameter of use for the content item. In a typical application, the “scope” represents
the month or months of use and the Active selection indicates the current month.
• Scope – a term used to determine the range of use of a piece of content. Some content may be
identified as use forever (such as a safety briefing), some content may be identified as being
usable for a specific month, and some content may be identified as being usable for multiple
months. Along with the ability to select the “Active” characteristic, this permits a superset of
content (such as multiple months) to be loaded onto the system.

4.2.2 Content Loading Menu

Content Loading is managed as one of the maintenance “Download” functions. Content loading is
accessed via the “Update Content” button on the maintenance “Download” screen as illustrated in Figure
4-2.

The Content Loading Menu screen identifies the name of the currently selected Content Inventory List
(Current Selection:) and the parameter for current active content (Active:). On the Content Loading
Menu, there are four basic selections and a “Back” button to return to the Download menu.

• Content Inventory Selection – a selection that permits the operator to specify or change the
selected Content Inventory List (CIL). This is used when the operator wants to change the
definition of the content to be loaded into the system.
• Change Active Selection – a selection that permits the operator to specify the subset of the loaded
or specified content that is to be used on current flights. This is how an operator would indicate
that pre-loaded content (like the next month’s content) is now to be used. While this illustrates a
process by which the active selection is changed manually, the system is also capable of changing
the active selection based on an aircraft event or combination of events (such as month change
while on the ground).
• Content Loading Status – a selection that permits the operator to view information on the status of
transferring content from one or more content loaders like a Portable Data Loader (PDL) and the
status of distributing this content to the appropriate system servers.
• Content Loading Control – an engineering level selection that permits the operator to view and
change the features of content loading. These included automatic and manual controls as well as
a variety of defaults that can be set up.

4.2.3 Content Inventory Selection

Content is managed through the use of a file called a Content Inventory List (CIL). The system can have
a variety of CILs loaded and available. Only one CIL may be selected at any point in time. The CIL
drives the content loading and crossloading process. Content that is not identified in the currently
selected CIL is typically deleted from the on-board servers. The Content Download process attempts to
obtain one copy of the content identified in the CIL and load it into one of the on-board servers. The
Content Crossload process identifies the Content that is to be loaded in each server and seeks to transfer
the content from wherever it can be found into the server.

When the “Change Inventory Selection” selection is made on the Content Loading Menu, the system
looks to all servers and potential portable data loaders for available Content Inventory lists. While this
search is being performed, a progress bar is presented with the title: “Collecting available Content
Inventory Lists.” When the collection is complete (about 30 seconds) a Content Inventory Selection
screen is presented (as illustrated in Figure 4-3).

The Content Inventory Selection screen identifies the currently selected CIL by title and check in the
associated check box. The screen also indicates the subset of the content that is active. A list of all CIL
files that have been found in the system is presented in tabular form (see Figure 4-3). For each CIL, an
entry is provided containing the Description (obtained from the file), filename, and number of servers
containing the CIL. The currently selected CIL is indicated with a check in the associated check box.
The user can use the associated check box to select a different CIL.

Figure 4-3 Content Inventory List Selection

Once a new CIL has been checked and the user presses the OK button, the system starts the process of
making the system consistent with the new CIL. Since one of the goals of the content loading process is
to make the aircraft operational as fast as possible, it is important to know if the content is divided into
subsets and if so, which of the subsets would be Active.

Upon exiting the Content Inventory Selection screen with an OK, the Active Content Selection screen
illustrated in Figure 4-4 is presented. This screen reflects the newly selected CIL under Selected Content
and provides a checklist table of the subsets of the content that can be made active. The user must select
one of these subsets as Active and press OK to complete the specification of a new CIL for use.

Figure 4-4 Active Content Selection

Since the selection of a new CIL can have such a significant impact on system servers, any change to the
CIL is followed by the Content Inventory Confirmation menu illustrated in Figure 4-5.

Once the user selects “YES, I AM SURE” confirming the change in CIL choices, a screen is presented
with a progress bar and titled “Please wait while the servers process the new content list.” During this
process, the system makes sure that all servers have a copy of the newly selected CIL and if appropriate,
recognize the subset of the content that is to be Active. Once the data is collected the content loading
process begins and the Content Loading Summary screen of Figure 4-7 is presented.

4.2.4 Content Activation

To provide enhanced flexibility in managing the process of loading content onto the aircraft, the content
loading process permits the loading of content that is not currently to be used. This is especially useful
when an airline needs to take several days to update the entire fleet of aircraft with a new set of content
(typically the next months) but does not want the content to be used until a specified time (say the first
day of the month). The CIL supports this process by having a field associated with each piece of content
in the CIL indicating its scope of use. For example, some material might be for use during November,
some might be for use in December, and some might be for use at anytime. The process of informing the
system of the content that is to be currently Active for use is provided by the Active Content Selection
screen.

When a “Change Active Selection” is selected on the Content Loading Menu, the Active Content
Selection screen illustrated in Figure 4-6 is presented. It indicates the name of the currently Selected
Content CIL and the current Active setting. A check-box list is provided with the different content
activation choices. To change the current active selection, the user selects the check box for the active
subset desired and presses OK. The system then performs the processing necessary to make the system
use and present the content selections corresponding to the Active criteria.

As an aid in determining the success of a change in the active content selection, each entry has an
indication of the load status of the corresponding subset of content. In the example illustrated in Figure
4-3, both the Nov and Dec subsets are 100% loaded. If some of the content were either not loaded or had
not completed the appropriate crossload, the appropriate percentage would be reflected.

4.2.5 Content Loading Summary Screen

The primary interface for determining the status of content in the system is illustrated in Figure 4-7, the
Content Loading Summary Screen. This screen is intended to provide to the user all of the high-level
status information. Further details are available using the “detail,” “engineering,” and “PDL” selections
in the upper left of the screen, but this information is intended for engineering level experts.

Figure 4-7 Content Loading Summary Screen

4.2.6 Content Flight Readiness Status

The Content Flight Readiness Status window reflects the status of content identified as needed for
immediate use (Active Content). It indicates (1) the number of servers that have all content necessary for
flight, (2) the number of servers that do not have all of the content necessary for flight, and (3) the number
of servers whose status is unknown because they are not currently reporting. A RED/GREEN indicator in
the upper right hand corner of the window is GREEN when all active content is available in all servers.

4.2.7 Content Download Status (PDL)

The Content Download Status window reflects the overall status of loading content from the PDL. The
intent of this window is to indicate to the operator when the PDL is no longer needed (and could therefore
be disconnected or removed). It provides one progress bar for obtaining Active Content from the PDL
and a second progress bar for obtaining Inactive Content from the PDL. A RED/YELLOW/GREEN
indicator in the upper right hand corner of the window is YELLOW when all active content is fully
loaded from the PDL and GREEN when all active and inactive content are fully loaded from the PDL.

4.2.8 Content Crossload Status

The Content Crossload Status window reflects the overall status of distributing content among the system
servers. The intent of this window is to indicate to the operator when content distribution is complete. It
provides one progress bar for the distribution of Active Content to all servers and a second progress bar
for the distribution of Inactive Content to all servers. A RED/YELLOW/GREEN indicator in the upper
right hand corner of the window is YELLOW when all Active content is fully distributed and GREEN
when all Active and Inactive Content is fully distributed among the servers.

4.2.9 Current Activity

The Current Activity window indicates whether any content transfer activity is in progress. The
Download field indicates whether there is any data transfer activity occurring with the PDL and the
Crossload field indicates whether there is any data transfer activity among the servers. A RED/GREEN
indicator in the upper right hand corner of the window is GREEN when there is activity underway or
activity is complete and all content is available (active and inactive).

4.2.10 Detailed Information on Loading

In the upper right-hand corner of the Content Loading Summary screen are a number of buttons from
which further information on Content loading can be obtained. Each of the three selections, detail,
engineering, and PDL, are appropriate for use by expert or engineering level personnel. The overall menu
flow from the Content Loading Summary screen to the various detail screens is illustrated in Figure 4-8.

designed to be capable of being automatic and operator free, there are situations in which it may be
desirable for the automatic process to be suspended in favor of more detailed control.

The Content Load Control Menu identifies the currently selected CIL (Current Selection:), the subset of
the content that is active (Active:), and the current control state of the load process (Current State:). The
menu also provides four (4) control choices as well as a “Back” button to return to the Content Loading
Menu.

Figure 4-14 Content Load Control Menu

• Automatic Enable/Disable – a selection that enables or disables the automatic content load
process. When enabled, a system algorithm determines whether it is permissible to perform
server crossloading. It is expected that crossloading may not be desired during certain phases of
aircraft activity (like when VOD services are enabled) and the automatic Enable feature invokes
this level of control.
• Enable Load/Crossload Unconditionally – a selection that indicates to the system that Crossload
should be active at all times irrespective of aircraft mode or activity. The example illustrated in
Figure 6 indicates the current setting is “Enabled Unconditionally.”
• Disable Load/Crossload Unconditionally – a selection that indicates to the system that Crossload
should be totally disabled.
• Engineering Control – a selection that provides access to a detailed level control screen
appropriate for engineering personnel.

4.2.15 Content Load Control - Engineering Menu

The Content Load Control Engineering Menu illustrated in Figure 4-15 provides the engineering level
user detailed controls over the Download and Crossload process as well as the ability to make the changes
to the process temporary or persistent.
• Enable Content Download – when checked permits the Download of content from the content
loader/PDL. When unchecked, data will not be transferred from the content loader/PDL.

• Enable Content Crossload – when checked permits the servers to distribute or crossload content
among themselves. When unchecked, servers will not obtain content from each other.
• Enable Content Deletion – when checked, permits the servers to delete any content that is not in
the currently selected CIL. When unchecked, the deletion of unreferenced content is inhibited.
• Allow Loading even when VOD is Active – when checked, permits the servers to distribute or
crossload content even when the system is actively providing VOD service.

These changes can then be specified as temporary with the intent that they the system will revert to the
previous settings on a power cycle or that the settings are permanent until changed by subsequent operator
action.

4.3 CONTENT LOADING PROCEDURE

Content Loading at the airline location is an important step in assuring a successful onboard passenger
experience. This document has been written for the designated person assigned to loading content to the
Thales iSeries system. Step-by-step procedures describe methods for loading content. If there are any
questions about this procedure, please contact your local Thales Representative or call the Thales Content
Management Center at 1+ 949-790-2545.

4.3.1 Overview

Content Management is an ongoing procedure that is required each time the airline updates its onboard
entertainment program. The content to be loaded has been compiled and tested at the Thales Content
Management Center in Irvine, California.
The equipment needed to perform Content Management includes the following:
• A Portable Data Loader (PDL)
• Removable Hard Drive
• Ethernet Cable

The airline has purchased multiple Removable Hard Drives, which supports a content rotating procedure
between the airline and the Thales Content Management Center. This is further explained later in this
document.

4.3.2 Portable Data Loader and Removable Hard Drive

The PDL is a rugged computer that is designed for easy transit to and from the aircraft. Once the PDL is
received the first time, it should be maintained in a safe, locked location when not in use. There is no
need to mail it back to Thales unless service is required. Whenever shipping is required, make sure to
send it in its transit case.

The Removable Hard Drive is located on the right side of the PDL. It includes a swing handle that
enables the user to insert and remove it from the PDL as required. Each time the user receives an updated
drive, the software that has been preloaded includes the following:
• Thales Proprietary Content Management Software
• Windows XP
• Secret Agent 5.0 Decryption Software
• Passenger Content

Figure 4-17 Removable Hard Drive

4.3.3 Getting Started (Away From Aircraft)

This section is a prerequisite to loading content on the aircraft. Perform the following steps away from
the aircraft a few days prior to loading content:
• When the Removable Hard Drive is received, insert it into the PDL side slot. Make sure that the
POWER is OFF during this step.
• To POWER the PDL ON, open the unit so that the keyboard can be viewed. At the top of the
keyboard is a power button as shown in Figure 4-18.

• This password is unique to your airline and is valid for a 6-month period. If current password has
not been received, call the Thales Content Management Center at 1+ 949-790-2545.
• Once the private password has been correctly entered, a progress screen will display to show the
progress of the decryption (refer to Figure 4-22). Upon completion, this screen will disappear. If
this process is not successful, please contact the Thales Content Management Center to diagnose
the problem. If there is a file error, it may be necessary to order and receive a second Removable
Hard Drive.

• Decryption will take a considerable amount of time. It is recommended that the decryption be
started the day prior to the scheduled time to load the content to the aircraft. To help estimate the
time requirement, a feature film takes approximately 20 minutes to decrypt. Multiply 20 by the
number of feature films that the airline will be loading.
• After the decryption is complete, ensure that all selected files have a green tick (PASS) legend to
the left hand side of the filename in the decryption progress screen, and then click the close

4.4 SOFTWARE LOADING

Software is loaded to the iSeries LRUs in a two-phase process, in which the code is first uploaded from
the CD-ROM on the PDL to the DSU AM6-12 hard disk drive and then downloaded to individual LRU
types or individual LRUs.

When downloading software, it is important to verify that the correct files to be downloaded were
successfully uploaded and that all of the necessary files are selected. An error here could result in
missing or incompatible files on an LRU type that may prevent further downloads to correct the problem.

CAUTION: Ensure power is not interrupted. It is recommended that all system power switches
and circuit breakers be placarded prior to commencing software loading.

4.4.1 Software Load Procedure – Phase One

The Phase 1 procedure uploads software from the CD-ROM on the PDL to the DSU AM6-12 hard disk
drive. Connect the cable from the PDL Ethernet port to the RJ-45 jack in the VCC. The software can be
uploaded either by software package or by file.

CAUTION: Failure to comply with the documented software download procedure could result
in SEBs being rendered inoperative, and the only corrective action would be to
replace each LRU.

Old software components left on the Phase 1 directory may be incompatible and
cause SEB corruption.

The Service Bulletin, which provides the documentation and authorization for
installing the new Phase I software, will instruct the operator if any files need to be
deleted.

4.5 IP SEQUENCING

4.5.1 Description

In the TopSeries IFE system, the SEBs do not have any hard-coded or hard-wired addressing to indicate
their positions within the system. Since each SEB needs to have a unique Ethernet address associated
with its seat-group number, the IP Sequencing system was developed.

Each Ethernet-capable LRU in the system contains a configuration data file that defines the “map” of all
the LRUs. The SEB data include each SEBs position within which string, connected to which port of
which ADB, the seat-group number of that position and the Ethernet address of that seat-group. The IP
Sequencing uses the configuration data file to allow each SEB a means of determining its position within
the network.

Each SEB “passes through” the Ethernet interface to the next downstream SEB in its string, so that in
normal operation all the SEBs are connected to the Ethernet network. Each SEB is also equipped with a
software-controlled output switch that it uses to disable communications to the downstream LRUs.

4.5.2 IP Sequencing Procedure

When IP Sequencing starts, the ADBs command all the SEBs to set their output switches to the OFF
position. The ADB can then communicate with only the first SEB on each string, so it tells the SEB on
string one that it is the first position on the first string. The SEB checks the configuration data file to
determine its seat group location and its Ethernet address. The ADB then tells the SEB to turn on its
output switch, so that it can now talk to the SEB in the second position on string one, and gives that SEB
its location, and then turns on its output switch. This continues for each SEB in each string until the
entire system is sequenced per the configuration data file.
