DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

Engine Ignition • is triggered by a 36-minus-1 tooth trigger wheel
located on the crankshaft pulley and damper.
The electronic ignition (EI) system for the 2.0L and
2.3L engines consists of the following components: • provides ignition timing and crankshaft speed
(rpm) to the powertrain control module (PCM).
• Coil on plug
Refer to Section 303-14 for removal and installation
• Spark plugs of the CKP sensor.
• Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor The coil on plug:
• Camshaft position (CMP) sensor
• is controlled by the PCM.
The crankshaft position (CKP) sensor:
• fires 2 spark plugs simultaneously.
• is a variable reluctance sensor. The spark plug:
• is mounted on the engine front cover.
• ignites the fuel and air mixture.
