ROCKS

WHAT IS A ROCK?

A rock is a solid made up of a bunch of different minerals. Rocks are generally not
uniform or made up of exact structures that can be described by scientific formulas.
Scientists generally classify rocks by how they were made or formed.

CLASSIFICATION OF ROCKS

IGNEOUS ROCKS
It came from the word “ignis” meaning fire. It is the crystallized form of magma. It can
be classified into two; extrusive igneous rock and intrusive igneous rock.
SEDIMENTARY ROCKS
It means sediments – remaining particles. It is formed from deposition of different
materials on earth’s surface. It is lithified or cemented together by natural process
and hows distinct layering (fossils).
METAMORPHIC ROCKS
It came from the word “meta” means change, “morph” means form. It is derived from
igneous or sedimentary rocks. It forms when it is exposed to high pressure and/ or
temperature. It also undergone physical and chemical change.
