Abstract

The purpose of this research is to identify the changes in the city of Lahore due to the
Metro Bus line. Metro Bus totally change the face of the city. There are total three
phases of this research: before construction of the Metro, construction phase and the
present conditions. The final phase involves the working of the Metro, economy,
passengers, and the analytics. At the end there I will discuss my vision for the future.
Metro Bus Line Lahore
Phase-I (Before Construction of Metro Track)

Lahore is the second largest city of Pakistan with estimate population of 10 million.

The transport demand estimated by Japanese International Co-operation Agency (JICA) is 12

million trips, which includes 4 million short walking trips and 8 million motorized trips, on a usual
weekday.  The number of vehicles registered in Lahore increased sharply from 95 vehicles in
2001 to 238 vehicles in 2008; per 1000 population. However, motorcycles make up for more than
half (57%) of all the registered vehicles, whereas cars represent one third of the registered
vehicles in Lahore. (System, 2017).

Ferozpur road also known as Lahore-Kasur road is the main road of Lahore. It divides the
city into two parts. Middle class areas are located on the sides of the road. However, there are
many housing societies are built along this road. It started from Kasur and ends near Mall
road.

This map shows the route of that road. It runs exactly in the center off the city and almost
cover many areas. Before the construction of the Metro Bus line, the image of the city and the
road was totally different. There was at least 30’ wide verge in the center of the road before
redline construction. There was plantation in that verge. The trees in the center acted as a
barrier. There were no overhead road crossings. Road crossing were through this landscape
verge at certain distances.
This is a section of the road. In this figure there is a verge in the center and trees on the sides of
the road.
