Challenges Facing Scientific Research in Developing Countries

A critique paper

According to Badr, research laboratories in developing countries lack modern and even
functional equipment. In which he will define these problems by having relationship to the
physical environment. Research is never a process in developing countries. The lack of
preparedness, moral support and financial reasons, time and manpower available for research are
all barriers to conducting scientific research in developing countries.
Because of modern technology, new equipments tend to cost highly and it is impossible to do a
faster task with an outdated equipments. With that, another problem or challenge is the lack of
skills of the technicians. Some major projects need essential equipments such as numerous kits
and chemicals, isotopes, microscopes that is not always available domestically. Meaning, they
would need to order internationally but because of lack of funds, it is impossible.
Another one is the computers. We use computers in our daily lives. Either for school, work,
business, and even in scientific research. Since the technology-advancement, developing
countries find it more difficult to gain access with this. In laboratories, it is important that you
have high megabits per second, or what we call ‘mbps’. With this high speed internet, scientist
may be able to gain access to databases easily. But based on Badr’s experience, most scientists
don’t have an email address which may be difficult if you want to contact them online. This is a
sign of lack of professionalism, since email is essential.
To conclude, we can say that scientific research is not suitable for developing countries, because
of lack of technology, lack of funds for improvement, and they focus more on the basic essentials
such as food, shelter, employment, and health care. That is why developed countries continue
improving more and their economy seems to be higher because of the technology, and scientific
research. However, some recommendations are needed.
