Be Creative Festival

Title of Production: ‘You’re in love with a psycho’ Kasabian - music video
Competition

The competition I am producing my music video for is the

BeCreative festival. This festival is open to all creative media
second year students and takes place over the winter period. I
am participating in the competition for TV and film students where
there is a choice between creating a short film, music video or
stop motion for a particular audience; niche 18 plus or PG
mainstream.
I have decided to create a music video for an 18 plus niche
audience as I believe this type of production will allow me to
demonstrate my skills most effectively. The rules for creating a
music video are that it must have a strong narrative, a parallel
edit, cut to the beat and be to the whole song.
Before submitting the final production, a detailed and creative brief
must be submitted and a detailed research booklet on my chosen target
audience which needs to include what can legally be put into
that classification and where they watch productions.
Additionally, Research on the codes and conventions of my
chosen mediums, a planning and production booklet and an
evaluation and reflective diary on how you have met target
audience by using the correct codes and conventions of my
medium needs to be submitted.
There will be one winner who receives a prize of £50 which is
decided on work ethic as oppose to quality. Additionally,
‘BeCreative’ will also choose the top three productions from each
category through an online poll. The deadline for submission is the
14th December 2022 at 4pm.
Outline of final idea

My final idea is a music video to the song ‘You’re in love with a psycho’ by
Kasabian. My idea will be based on a new couple who begin going on
dates/hanging out at each other’s houses when the male protagonist begins
to act creepy/ secretive and odd. There will be lots of scenes of him acting
slightly suspicious but the woman brushing it off and choosing to see his
actions as kind gestures. For example, he will offer to clean the room but in
reality it's because there are sheets with blood on everywhere as the
background song suggests he is a 'psycho', or he will be taking the rubbish
out but also have a body bag. The viewers will know he is a psycho from
these scenes but the woman will still think he is a suitable partner. At the end
the man will offer to cook a candlelit home cooked meal and as he opens
the closh there will be a head which is the shock ending. I have to create this
production as a parallel edit therefore the only scene I will show with the two
characters is the end scene.

Target Audience
My production is targeted at an 18 plus niche audience. I have chosen to
aim my production at this target audience as it will include violence and gory
images therefore would not be appropriate as a PG production. Additionally,
as it is a mix of horror and romance this is a strange mix of genres therefore is
more likely to be watched by a niche audience who are interested in both
genres.

Legal and ethical issues

The idea for my production does raise a variety of ethical concerns due to
the topic of the storyline. I need to think carefully how I will portray the
violence and topic of cannibalism in my production in a way not to promote
it to or offend viewers. However, I will only use cannibalism as a topic in a
suggestive way as oppose to actually showing any extremely graphic scenes
portraying it.
There are also certain legal issues uploading a production showing violent or
graphic imagery onto YouTube. YouTube have certain rules regarding
‘dramatized or fictional content’ such as the content will be prohibited if it is
not made clear or there is not context given that the footage shown is
fictional/ not real violence. To avoid my video being taken down I will have a
trigger warning at the beginning of the production as a warning of the
content about to be shown and also a disclaimer that the violence is all
faked and no harm was caused in order to minimise the chance of any
distress being caused to viewers.
