ONE FOR SORROW

EXT. OUTSIDE HOUSE, ON ROAD. EVENING

We see a young teenage scuffed up girl, face pressed up


against a police car. The scene rolls out in slow motion,
focusing on the girl, MYA TRENT. Her eyes are wet and glossy,
reflecting off the blue sirens, she stares off just to the
right of the camera. We hear the police officer (who cannot
be seen), but her words are muffled over the sound of ringing
and the sirens alarm. Almost in an instant MYA switches her
line of eyesight towards the camera, looking directly at our
audience.

MYA (V.O)
This is so completely and utterly
f*cked.

INT. INTERROGATION ROOM. DAWN

THE WORDS "THREE WEEKS EARLIER..." APPEAR ON THE SCREEN.

MYA is sat in the chair centred directly across from the


seemingly obvious two-way mirror. She appears to be zoned
out, focusing on one spot of the drab looking table placed in
front of her. She's wearing a hooded jacket and a small
locket necklace, her hair messy and knotted. Layers of indigo
and grey layer themselves underneath her eyes, hinting that
she hasn't slept in days. The slam of the door unexpectedly
awakens her from her daydream, though she still holds her eye
line with the spot on the table. We don't see who has entered
the room, only an arm placing down a small plastic cup of
water beside MYA.

DETECTIVE HOLCOMBE
Hi MYA, thank you for coming down to
the station today. We really
appreciate it. I'm Detective Holcombe,
please understand you are not here as
a suspect, so are free to leave any
time. I'm sure you'd rather be home
with your family, so I'll do my best
to make sure we don't keep you too
long.

The police officer looks reassuringly at MYA. A small warm


smile across his face. He receives nothing in return, not
even a glance. The policeman looks back down at his feet,
slightly agitated at the lack of conversation.

DETECTIVE HOLCOMBE
The sooner we get talking the sooner
we can get the answers AMELIA
deserves. It's up to you, but you
could hold the vital piece of
information we need to close this case
for good. And that will be beneficial
for the both of us.

MYA flinches at the casual use of AMELIA's name, something


she hasn't heard in a while. After a few seconds of silence
pass, MYA rises her eye line towards DETECTIVE HOLCOMBE, head
still hanging low, body slumped and tired.

MYA TRENT
Yeah. Okay. What do you need to know?

DETECTIVE HOLCOMBE
First of all, I want to go to the
beginning. Spare no details.

What happened at the party, the night


of AMELIA's murder?

WE TRANSITION FROM THIS SCENE TO THE TITLE SEQUENCE.

INT.AMELIA'S BEDROOM - EVENING

Pop music plays in the background as we are introduced to


your standard teenage girl's bedroom. The room is covered in
fake plants, posters and fluffy cushions that consume the
entirety of AMELIA's bed. Sat on the edge is MYA. her hair
lightly curled, half of it tied back. She looks down at her
hands, twiddling her thumbs.

MYA TRENT
I'm starting to get nervous. Are you

sure I can come tonight? You know how


much I hate being your weird friend
that tags along to things.

The camera pans to AMELIA, applying layers of makeup to her


face in the mirror.

AMELIA BLACKWOOD
MYA GRACE TRENT, there is absolutely
no way you're getting out of going
tonight. Plus, I doubt anyone will
actually notice you're there, no
offence, you don't exactly put
yourself out there.

MYA laughs and grabs a pillow from beside her, chucking it at


AMELIA. She grabs it and turns around, astonished, she goes
to throw it back. Just before she's interrupted by MYA.

MYA TRENT
I'm just saying, it's becoming more
and more apparent that me and your
friends are polar opposites. Tonight,
will be a nightmare for me. I'd put
money on it.

AMELIA stands from her chair, rolling her eyes. She walks
towards her dresser, grabbing her necklace and attaching it
around her neck.

AMELIA BLACKWOOD
Okay, worst comes to worst. You come
and find me, and I'll leave with you
straight away. Alright?

MYA smiles and releases the breath she wasn't aware she was
holding. A car beeps outside AMELIAS house and the both of
them turn to look towards the window.

AMELIA BLACKWOOD
Thats our cue, you ready?

MYA TRENT
Think so.

AMELIA grabs MYA's hand and they both head towards the
bedroom door.

EXT. OUTSIDE PARTY, ON THE DRIVEWAY. NIGHT

The music echoes from inside the house and an array of


flashing disco lights display themselves through the windows.
MYA pulls down and straightens her mini skirt uncomfortably,
following AMELIA into the front door.

INT. INSIDE PARTY. NIGHT

A young girl and her overly affectionate boyfriend run


towards the both of them, squealing in excitement.

ZOE -
OMG, AMELIA! Nobody told me you were
coming tonight; I am actually so happy
you're here; CHLOE is properly pissing
me off.

She slurs on her words, pointing at AMELIA with every word


she says.

AMELIA BLACKWOOD
[light-heartedly] ZOE its 7 how are
you already this drunk?! [laughing]
what happened with Chloe? Tell me the
goss.

AMELIA wraps her arm around ZOE and turns back down the
corridor. She peaks her head around ZOE's shoulder, mouthing
"I'm sorry" to MYA.

MYA (UNDERNEATH HER BREATH)


Great.

She looks down at her hands, twiddling with them like she had
done back at AMELIAS house. She weaves in and out of the
group of loud teenagers. They all seem too drunk to function,
yet they somehow manage. MYA finds herself in the kitchen,
grabbing a red cup with coke, making her best efforts to
blend in with the crowd.

MYA TRENT
Excuse me, sorry.

Through the hustle, a young man's face stares intensely at


MYA. Not an accidental stare, but one that holds on tightly
and looks much deeper than the surface of a person. She
avoids eye contact with him as she makes her way across the
room, looking down only at her feet, and when she dares to
look back, the boy is gone. She frowns, the interaction was
so strange, had she imagined it?

This is until she enters another room, and he appears next to


her. He leans in so she can hear him over the music.

ACE HILL
Now, you look out of place.

He smiles looking back at her, one hand on a cup and one on a


cigarette. She looks offended, furrowing her eyebrows. She
scratches at her head confused.

MYA TRENT
Well great, thank you

ACE HILL
Don't get offended, if anything I just
gave you a compliment.

The boy walks backwards away from MYA,

She raises her glass as she walks up the stairs, making sure
not to spill any down her outfit. Though as she takes one
step at a time, she becomes dizzy, swaying from side to side.

MYA TRENT
Hey, AMELIA... AMELIA

She reaches a bedroom, gripping onto the walls and the bed
MYA takes a final look down at her cup, a moment of
realisation before she falls to the ground. The scene plays
out with a mixture of black screens and a loud high-pitched
noise before she passes out on the floor.

INT. INSIDE PARTY, BEDROOM FLOOR. 4AM

A blood-curdling scream fills the house. And another, not


even ten seconds afterwards. MYA awakes, her body aching and
head pounding. The adrenaline kicks in once she remembers
what had woken her. She stumbles but makes her way towards
the small sobs, she finds herself outside the bathroom. A
girl is running out the room, one hand on her neck, the other
grasping at her stomach. Mascara running underneath her eyes.

THE GIRL
Don't. Don't go in there.

MYA TRENT
What?

MYA continues into the bathroom. She reaches and opens the
bath curtains to reveal AMELIA, dead. She's covered in blood,
dripping from her forehead and stained across her once

pristine outfit. Across her chest, 10 feathers, black, white


and blue. Like a magpie. MYA grasps her mouth in shock and
picks up one of the feathers.

RANDOM GIRL
Someone call the-

INT. MYAS KITCHEN. MORNING

The scene switches from the overhead shot of her holding the
feather to her holding a butter knife. A small piece of bread
under her hand on a plate. In the background we hear her mum,
slightly muffled.

MYAS MUM

Darling, I understand how difficult this must be for you. You


can take as much time off as you want. And you can talk to me
and your father as much as you need. We loved her like our
own.

MYAS MUM walks over to where MYA is standing, placing a hand


on her shoulder, she slides the butter knife from MYAS hand
and into her own.

MYAS MUM
You need to toast the bread first
love, go and take a sit down in the
lounge. I'll finish this off for you.
Okay?

MYA steps back from in front of the plate, not saying a word.
She hadn't realised how little she was paying attention to
what she was doing. Her mind drifts off again, a flashback of
the feather appears in front of her. She blurts out...

MYA TRENT
Hey Mum... what bird has like blue,
white and uhh black feathers?

MYAS MUM
Oh. Uh, could be a magpie? Why'd you
ask?

MYA leaves, not answering her mum's question. Her brain is in


knots, looking for answers but only receiving more questions.
She feels sick, holding her stomach she runs to the bathroom,
the camera left behind in the kitchen.

Music fades in the background, a montage of videos appear on


screen of MYA struggling with her grief. Her sat alone in

class, at lunch, her room getting messier, at an art display


(SEE monster), not eating, feeling ill, going into and out of
the police station multiple times.

We see her asleep in her bed, tossing and turning. The screen
flashes black, taking us into MYA'S head, playing out the
scene as if we were with her. She follows AMELIA around the
party, though she can't talk, and nobody can see her. A
hooded guy wearing all black follows AMELIA, almost the same
as MYA is doing. MYA calls out...

MYA TRENT
AMELIA watch o-

Three gunshots ring out in her dream, awaking her from her
sleep. She had hoped to never re-live that nightmare, and yet
it happens almost every night. She sits on the edge of her
bed rubbing her tired eyes. The clock on her side table reads
5:23AM. She turns the alarm clock over and walks toward the
bathroom, she splashes her face with cold water and fills up
a cup, holding it in her hand she swirls it around the glass.
The mirror reflects back at her, though she wishes it
wouldn't. Her hair in a knotted updo, face looking dull and
lifeless, her eyes puffy from the night before. She stares
for a little too long, zoned out. Three loud and eerie knocks
at the door echo throughout the quiet house. She drops her
glass of water; it shatters and splashes all over her sink.
She looks down, disappointed. She carries on towards the
front door, confused but not quite awake enough to start to
worry. She unlocks the door to reveal a young boy, a familiar
young boy. A flashback to the party appears on screen. The
boy with the cold stare stands on MYA's doorstep, wearing an
all-black outfit and a small, lock necklace. He rubs at his
throat uncomfortably, a cigarette in the other hand. He holds
the same stare he had the night of AMELIAS murder.

ACE HILL
I'm ACE. We met at the party. I know
this is weird and you don't have any
reason to believe me. But I know what
happened to AMELIA; I think we should
talk.
