The Cask of Amontillado

By: Edgar Allan Poe

Genre and the theme of the of the story

 The genre of the of the story is short story and horror fiction and the theme of “The Cask of
Amontillado” is revenge. Montreseur is motivated by his hate to take revenge on
Fortunato, after Fortunato greatly insulted his family and caused him “a thousand
injuries”.

Symbolism depicted in the story

 For Fortunato, Amontillado symbolizes pleasure and enjoyment.. He would probably do

just about anything for it, but it betrays him. This is basically what led Amontillado to his
tragic death, if he would have been sober he would not have fell for Montresors tricks.

Traits and attitude of the main character

 Montressor is a manipulative and vengeful person. These characteristics lead to the
death of Fortunato, a man who has wronged him. Through the acts, words, and thoughts
of the character, one is able to see him carry out his plan for revenge.

Relate the story to the culture today

 I can relate the story to our culture for today, some of us because of angry we can make an
wrong decision in our live that lead to us in the wrong way.

Important value/ values and discuss how these values can be taught to your students

 In most cases, if you love someone, they will love you back. This, however, is not the
real meaning of love. Love should be unconditional. With more love in the world,
kindness will follow and replace cruelty. Students must learn that spreading love not hate
will bring them happiness and success in their adulthood.
“ Hamlet”

By: William Shakespeare

Genre and theme of the story

 The genre of the story is Drama/ Tragedy and the theme is  death. It is the death of the King
Hamlet that triggers the events in the play one after another. When the Prince Hamlet
hears about the news of his father's death, he comes back to Denmark. He is shocked at
the early remarriage of his mother with his uncle.

Symbolism depicted in the story

 The skull in Hamlet is of Yorick, the court's jester. This skull is a symbol of death, decay
and uselessness of a person after his death. It is a physical remnant of the dead person
that is an omen of what he may have to face in the life hereafter. ... Death does not
leave anybody intact or alive.
Traits and attitude of the main character

 Hamlet is melancholy, bitter, and cynical, full of hatred for his uncle's scheming and
disgust for his mother's sexuality. A reflective and thoughtful young man who has studied
at the University of Wittenberg, Hamlet is often indecisive and hesitant, but at other
times prone to rash and impulsive acts.

Relate the story to the culture today

 Hamlet struggles with life or death issues, but he keeps going. ... The community sees
Hamlet as providing a lens to view some of life's greatest challenges and hardest
moments. But it also recognizes our strengths in being able to keep going and find
tactics to deal with those challenges life throws at us.

Important value/ values and discuss how these values can be taught to your students

 But the truth is everyone in Hamlet acts shamelessly and for us the moral of the play
is the production of shame in its audience. Not too much, just enough. "Stay, Illusion!"
Illusion is the only means to action. The only thing that can save us in this distracted
globe is theatre.
