Lesson Plan in English (Grade 7, 2nd Quarter, Week 3)

I. Objectives

At the end of the lesson, the students can:

1. Identify which of the statements has literal or figurative language.


2. Differentiate literal and figurative language.
3. Get information from the text listened to.

Content Standards: The learner demonstrates understanding of: Philippine literature during the
Period of Apprenticeship as a means of examining conflicts; various purposeful listening and
viewing strategies; difference between literal and figurative language; ways to extract and
condense information based on library sources; verbal and non-verbal cues in oral
communication; and types phrases, clauses, and sentences.

Learning Competency:

1. EN7V-II-a-10.1: Discriminate between literal and figurative language (Vocabulary


Development)

2. EN7LC-II-a-6.1: Extract information from the text listened to (Listening


Comprehension)

II. Subject Matter.

Topic: Litearal and Figurative language (Simile, Metaphor, Personification)

Materials: Worksheets, Pictures, Audio Recording, and other visual aids for discussion.

III. Procedures

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer

2. Greetings

3. Putting the class in order.

4. Checking the attendance.

B. Motivation

Title: Show Me Some Reaction

Time frame: 5 minutes

Directions: The teacher will flash pictures on the screen. Along with the picture
are choices that best describes the picture. The students will give a smiley emoji if they think that
the meaning of the statement is literal and a shocked face emoji if it doesn’t.

1. The siblings relationship can be compared to that of an overheated kettle

2. The boy loves his dog.


3. Some people are scared of centipedes.

The teacher will then ask the students why they have given such reactions to the
statements and their thoughts about it.

The classroom rules and objectives will then be presented by the teacher.

C. Lesson Proper.

1. Activity

Title: You’re all ears.

Duration : 15 minutes

Expected outcome: The learners can get important information from what they
have listened to, for them to answer the activity.

Direction: The teacher will play a recorded audio of the story “the Centipede” by
Rony V. Diaz as a source of information for the activity. After listening to the
recorded audio, teacher will then give out worksheets containing statements from
the story and the students will then identify if the statement is figurative or not.
The students shall write L if it is literal and F if it is figurative.

1. Berto was tasked by Delia to kill Berto‘s adopted dog. L

2. Centipedes often scare people because of how they look. L

3. Eddie saw his sister as a thorn on his side – something which should be plucked. F

4. For most of the story, Eddie and Delia were like oil and water. F

5. Eddie‘s sister was stunned when she saw the centipede. L

2. Analysis

The teacher will then check if the students answered correctly. The teacher will
also ask the students why they answered L or F to each statement.

3. Abstraction

The teacher will ask more lead questions to lead the students in reinforcing what
they know. The teacher will also ask what they have learned from this lesson.

4. Application
The teacher will give a worksheet containing a paragraph from the story. The
students will then pick 3 statements that has literal language and 3 statements that
has figurative language and write them on the columns along with a short reason
as to why they think that the meaning of the statement is literal or figurative.

IV. Assessment

Test 1.
Based on the story that the students have listened to, the teacher will instruct them to write 5
statements that has literal language and 5 statements that has figurative language.

Test 2.
The students shall be asked to differentiate literal from figurative language.

V. Assignment

Direction: Research the other different types of figures of speech along with their description.
Write them on your notebook.
