Activity 2: Pointing it Out!
1. What is the problem?
 The play's main conflict revolves around the sisters and their unhappy lives. existence.
They complain about their jobs, and the problems within their homes, yet, they
seemingly do not want to take an active role in changing their circumstances.

2. What is the turning point?


 The turning point is Olga and Natasha confront each other. Andrey confronts the
sisters. 
3. What events lead to the resolution (falling action)
 When all their guests leave, Masha admits to her sisters she's having an affair with
Vershinin, with whom she is desperately in love. 
4. What is the strongest theme in the piece?
 Change, Suffering, and the Meaning of Life

6. Describe the characters. How do they feel? How do
you know?
• Olga Prozorov – Olga is the eldest of three sisters and one brother. She is a kind woman
taking good care of her three siblings. She also has a kind heart who has the sympathy of the
poor. From the first scenario, Olga is desperate to return to the city where they were born in
Moscow.
• Masha Prozorov – Masha is the second sister. She is slightly a cold woman. She loves
music and reading books. However, Masha is regretful for her marriage which made her tired of
her husband and attracted to Vershonin. 
• Irina Prozorov – Irina is an innocent young woman. At first, she was full of life in her
20's. Yet, she becomes discontented with life and her work as she grows, which makes her
gloomy. She falls in love with Baron at last. She is most eager to go back to Moscow to live a
new life.
• Andrey Prozorov – Andrey is the sole brother of the three sisters. He is a sophisticated
man, however, he abandoned everything he studied for his love of Natasha. He is a loving
husband who respected his wife so much. 
• Natasha – Natasha is the wife of Andrey. She is an ambitious woman, who doesn't have
sympathy for the poor. She is a vicious woman who commits adultery with her faithful
husband.
• Baron – Baron is a kind of man with wit and humor. His vision about life is astonishing,
as people feel the same. He is a man who is full of happiness and liveliness. He is madly in love
with Irina. 
• Vershinin – A man with good words and philosophical views. However, I found him less
attractive because he despised his wife and had an affair with another woman. He always states
that happiness didn't exist as he had never been happy his whole life. 
• Kulygin – He has a pleasing attitude, yet is funny. He is a loyal husband to Masha,
despite that he admires Olga. 
• Chebutykin – is the kind of man who doesn't have a stable job, yet he is a devoted man.
He is addicted to drinks even though he is forbidden to do so for the sake of his health. He
stands as the second father of the siblings. He looks like a man who lives leisurely.
• Solyony – He is a man who often cannot control his temper. He easily finds someone to
quarrel with. Always put on his angry face and talk nonsense. 
• Anfisa – She is a faithful servant to Prozorov. She was old and wished to stay there as a
servant despite that she was already weak and Natasha found it useless. However, she is
diligent and committed to her work.
