In reels of aluminum foil severely immersed in water, a vigorous oxidation reaction occurs,producing hydrogen gas and
heat. When the reels are removed from the cooling effect of the water,this reaction accelerates, large amounts of steam
are produced,temperature rises significantly,hydrogen gas can reach concentrations over the lower explosive limit(4
Vol-% in air):this can result in an explosive rupture of the reels. Rupturing of a reel may occur even when the reel is only
party immersed in water,and even if the immersion time is short.

Aluminum foil is protected on its surface by an oxide layer, which prevents reactions with air or water.
Fresh aluminum surfaces that may result from mechanical build up an oxide layer immediately at the presence of oxygen.
The oxide layer may with acid or alkaline watery system with water by building easily inflammable hydrogen. This reaction
may at the presence of more noble metals eventually be favored by forming galvanic elements.
