8 Perkins’ non Dies: |Fan engine is operated on load less than 25.30% of i's rated output, cerain symtoms will be observed which may cause for concern. The engine Is designed to run up to a maximum power and so ‘the size ofthe piston, the wall loading ofthe piston rings, etc, ere designed to cope with this, ‘When an engine is run at light load then the energy put into the cylinder is low and consequently the cylinder pressure is lower and so Is the temperature. The results the piston is rot such a good ft in the bore, with increased clearanced, allowing more cil to pass the piston and be burt, whichis indicated by high oll consumption. With lower preasures the sealing capacity ofthe rings is lower, alsa itis not ideal for bedding in the rings and can cause bore glazing, which ruins all control, Cit wil start to appear ‘tom the exhaust manifolds gaskets For T an TA engines: Turbochargers are fitedto increase power by supplying more ai othe cyinders When running with a turbocharger, aris sucked in, which can have vacuum levels up to 4.9kPa, with pressure ralios of 3:1. The compressor seals are designed to work most efficienty when the {ureocharger compressor Is operating at its’ most effciant point, Ifthe engine is running at low powers then the turbocharger is running at low speed (no energy from the exhaust because the fuel inlet tothe engine is low) and the inlet vacuum fs low resulting in poor turbocharger seal loading and pull over of oll fom the bearing assembly. This oll is mixed with the air ané pumped into the marifolds where some separates from the ar when itcolides wit the inside ofthe manifold the joints are not ar ght the of wil leak out Black smoke will be produced from the exhaust outiets, dus to poor combustion at ight losd, as excess fuel is pumped through into the exhaust system, resulting In soot being expelled into the exhaust system. ‘A further result is that abnormal carbon build-up on the valves, piston crowns end exhaust ports. Thus the normal service interval of 2500 hours between lop overhauls may be reduced, Fue! dilution of the lubricating ot will also occure, Itis therefore recommended that the following precautions are observed := + Running on light load should be avoided or reduced to a minimum period. f weekly exercising on 10 load is carried ou, the running period should be kept down to maximum 10 minutes or until the battery charge rate returns to normal + Every year the engine / generating set should be run on full load for four (4) hours, to burn off ‘accumulations of carbon in the engine and exhaust system. This may require a "dummy" load, The load should be built-up gradually from zero over the four hour run.
