Description
The SLPC(M)/SLP system is a NCSE of type 4 (EN IEC 61496-1) or category 4
(EN ISO 13849-1).
The special feature of the SLPC(M) is the adjustable operating modes
startup/restart lock and relay monitor. The SLPCM receiver unit allows the
selection of different muting modes. Muting makes it possible to bypass the
protective field correctly.
The SLPC(M) receiver unit generates transmission pulses that are sent along a
cable to the SLP photoelectric sensor transmitter. This transmitter generates a
number of light beams (2, 3, 4, 6, or 8) to match the SLPC(M) and the light beams
are received and evaluated by the SLPC(M). The spacing of the protective beams
corresponds to EN ISO 13855.
The special design of the SLPC(M)8-2-A active/passive photoelectric sensor
includes a transmitter in the SLPC(M) that emits a beam whose direction is
changed by 180° by the SLP 8-2M mirror column into a second protective
returning beam that hits the receiver located on the SLPC(M). In this case, there is
no SLP photoelectric sensor transmitter. The beam distance is 500 mm.
The light beams form a protective field. Light beam interruptions are detected and
the OSSDs are turned off. Machine control equipment downstream in the circuit
can respond to this by turning off the hazardous movement in the secured area.
Depending on the type of photoelectric sensor, the sensing range of the
protective field may be 8 m, 10 m, 30 m, or 65 m.

Note!
If persons and objects (for example boxes, pallets, containers, etc.) use the same
access route to the hazardous area and the system is not supposed to switch off
118587 2011-12

when objects are introduced, different muting modes can be used with the
SLPCM. Muting is possible with 2 or 4 muting sensors.

Product Description

The standby output is activated if the receiver unit is expecting a restart

command, i.e., the protective beams are free after the unit is turned on or a beam
is interrupted. In addition, this output is used to indicate a system error. If an error
is present, the output switches on and off at a frequency of 1 Hz (flashing). the
cable should be pushed through the cable gland from the outside. Then a small
screwdriver must be pushed through the opening next to each terminal
compartment (size approximately 2 mm). Pushing the screwdriver away from the
terminal will open up the terminal. Then you can feed in the wire and remove the
screwdriver. The wire is now clamped in place. Perform the procedure in reverse
to release the wires. After all the wires have been clamped in place, tighten the
cable gland until there is no hole left. Then the connection cap can be placed in
position and tightened.
Cable = n x 0.08 ... 1.5 mm², diameter 5 ... 10 mm, n = number of connections
required.

4.3.2 SLPCM front connections

The connections provide an alternative to the terminal compartment. The front
connections of the SLPCM are 4- or 5-pin M12 sockets. The number of
connections varies depending on the design of the SLPC(M). The connections to
the transmitter, muting sensors, and external muting light are made through the
front connections.

Note!
When positioning the safety grid, make sure that a minimum distance to reflective
objects or surfaces is maintained.
This distance must be maintained from the protection level on all sides. This is the
only way of ensuring that an object in the beam path of the safety light grid is
detected reliably.

In accordance with EN ISO 13855, the following heights are recommended for
single beams parallel to the floor:

5.2 Mounting
Various mounting brackets are available for securing the safety light grid.

Installation
1. Align the transmitter and receiver units so that they are parallel to one another
and at the same height.
2. Align the transmitter and receiver units parallel with one another.
3. The weak signal indicator helps with correct alignment.

Note!
Safety light grids should be arranged so that the SLP transmitters connected to
the various SLPCM receiver units cannot direct beams at the receivers of other
receiver units.

Note!
When the SLPC(M) is integrated into the safety-related control system of the
machine, the instructions in EN IEC 61496-1 along with others must be taken into
consideration (activation of control elements downstream of NCSE in the circuit).

Caution!
Bypassing the protective beams
The safety light grids must be fitted in such a manner that it is not possible to
bypass the protective beams to access the protective area. It should not be
possible to do any of the following:
- crawl under the lowest beam,
- climb over the highest beam or
- walk between the two beams

To calculate the minimum distance of the photoelectric sensor from the hazardous
area, please refer to the applicable requirements and standards.
The standard version of the SLPC(M) is delivered with pnp OSSDs. These have a
separate power supply to facilitate galvanic isolation from the SLPC(M). If galvanic
isolation is not required, the power supply connections with the same names of
the internal circuit and the OSSDs can be connected with each other. Both the
pnp and the relay version are approved only for galvanic isolation between low
voltage networks. The relay outputs must be protected externally by F2A fuses. All
pnp outputs must be protected internally against short-circuit and do not require
any external fuses. When there is an inductive load on the relay output contacts,
they must be protected against the increased load caused by RC combinations or
freewheeling diodes. The circuit must be directed straight to the point of power
consumption. When using freewheeling diodes, it should be noted that the off-
delay time of the connected relays or contactors is extended.
118587 2011-12

19
SLP/SLPC AND SLP/SLPCM SAFETY LIGHT GRIDS
Installation

The following points should be taken into consideration during the installation:
■ Have the applicable standards and regulations been observed?
■ Do the technical data of the safety light grid meet the requirements of the
application?
■ Have the necessary distances been taken into consideration?
■ Are all inputs and outputs wired correctly?
■ Is it impossible to circumvent the protective device?
■ Do the positions of the restart and override buttons (SLPCM only) allow a
complete view of the hazardous area?
■ Is it impossible to press the buttons from inside the hazardous area?
5.3 Operating modes
The SLPC(M) receiver can be operated in various modes. After removing the
connection cap, the 10 DIP switches in the profile are accessible. There are 2
switches for each operating mode (for example, 1 and 6). Both switches must be
moved to the same position.

5.3.2 Relay monitor

The SLPC(M) can monitor external switching elements correlated in time with the
OSSD switch outputs for safety-relevant features with the aid of feedback
contacts. Normally closed contacts of force-directed relays should be used as
feedback contacts. The feedback contacts of all external switching elements
downstream in the circuit must be switched in series. One end of this series
connection must be connected to the positive power supply and the other end to
connection 9 of the end cap. The monitoring contacts on the external switching
elements must guarantee a reliable contact at a voltage of 20 V and a current of
5 mA. A surge voltage strength of 6 kV must be guaranteed between the
monitoring contacts and other contacts connected to a low voltage according to
the Low Voltage Directive.

Note!
The working area of the external switching elements must be protected with a fuse
that has a rated value of 60 % of the load capacity of the contacts to prevent the
contacts from welding together. The external switching elements are monitored at
a delay of 180 ms following the switching process. If the new switching state has
not been reached after the monitoring time (180 ms) has elapsed, the SLPC(M)
switches to a locking state and shows error on the diagnostic display. After the
cause is rectified, the error can be acknowledged by resetting the SLPC(M).

5.3.3 Muting (SLPCM)

In muting mode, the protective function of the SLPCM is bypassed correctly. For
bypassing to take place, there must be at least 2 activated muting sensors and
one muting light. Various muting modes can be set on the SLPCM. These modes
make it possible for you to adapt to different applications.
Evaluation of muting sensors through parallel or sequential muting
Muting sensors are activated within a short period of time or one after the other
according to their layout. The activation sequence can be monitored by selecting
either parallel or sequential muting.
Parallel muting
In parallel muting mode, muting sensors (M1 and M2 or M3 and M4) arranged in
pairs must be activated within 2 seconds. If only one of the muting sensors has
been activated within this time, it will be locked. The locking will block activation of
muting and the protective beams will remain active. The lock will not be removed
until the sensor is no longer activated.

Sequential muting
In contrast to parallel muting, for which the activated sensors MS1 and MS2 or
MS3 and MS4 must fulfill the muting condition, it is also possible with sequential
muting to satisfy the muting condition with sensors MS2 and MS3. The muting
sensors are activated one after the other. The layout of sensors should be
selected so that one person cannot unintentionally activate 2 sensors.

Muting monitoring with time window limiting or protective beam limited

muting

Note!
Continuous muting
To prevent dangerous continuous muting from occurring in the event of a failure of
the muting sensors, muting is operated with time window or protective beam
limiting. Muting limited by a time window should be used if the objects the
protective beams are supposed to pass by unimpeded will normally have crossed
over within about 240 s. If this time is too short, muting limited by protective
beams can be used. It should be noted that muting ends about 115 ms after all
protective beams have become free.

SLP/SLPC AND SLP/SLPCM SAFETY LIGHT GRIDS

Time window limiting

If muting limited by time window is set, each muting sensor is monitored by time.
Each sensor may be activated for a maximum of 240 s, which means that the
muting object must have passed the sensor within this time. If the time is
exceeded, the control unit disables the sensor. When the sensor is disabled,
muting can no longer be activated. The sensor must be deactivated before it can
be enabled.

Protective beam limiting

In the case of muting limited by protective beams, the muting sensors are
evaluated chronologically after they are activated. Two activated muting sensors
initiate the muting process. No later than 240 seconds after the activation (applies
for each muting sensor separately) at least one protective beam must be
interrupted. In contrast to muting limited by a time window, this stops time
measurement to allow muting unlimited by time. About 115 ms after the protective
field is exited (all protective beams are free) and the way through becomes free
again, all activated muting sensors are disabled so that muting is no longer
possible.

Muting sensors
The purpose of muting sensors is to detect muting objects. If an object is
detected, the output of the muting sensor switches its power supply through.
Sensors with relay or pnp output are suitable for this purpose. When no power is
flowing, the output of the muting sensor must not be active. The sensor output
should be capable of switching an operating current of 8 mA reliably at 20 V. The
following sensors can be used as muting sensors:
■ Retroreflective sensors (light on) with reflector on the object
■ Diffuse mode sensors
■ Inductive switches
■ Mechanical switches.

Installation

Muting light
When using muting to signal the muting status, an indicator light with a minimum
illuminated surface of 1 cm² and a minimum light intensity of 200 cd/m² must be
used. The SLPCM monitors the current of the muting indicator light for a minimum
value of 50 mA in accordance with IEC 61496-1. This monitoring ensures that the
warning function of the muting indicator light is performed correctly. If the muting
indicator light is defective, the SLPCM assumes the locking status and indicates
Error 6 (muting light defective) on its display. The muting light is monitored when it
is turned on, when the reset command is executed, and during the time in which
muting is active. Two muting light signals can be switched in parallel to increase
the availability of the system. In order to do this, both indicator lights must be close
to each other and visible at the same time upon approach to the sensing area of
the light curtain. No muting light indicators are required when muting is not being
used.
Emergency muting (only with SLPCM)
The emergency muting function is available for cases where the system must be
approached again to remove the obstructing object from the area around the
protective field and the muting sensors. During emergency muting, the disabled
muting sensors are evaluated again for a period of 3-4 seconds. As a result, the
OSSDs are turned on again for 3-4 seconds. Emergency muting can be triggered
with the override button. Triggering can be subsequently repeated, i.e., by
activating the button within 3 seconds, the duration of the On state of the OSSDs
can be further extended until the object has left the area around the muting
sensors.

6 Commissioning
6.1 Adjusting the protective beams
The transmitter and receiver units must be aligned so that they are at the same
height. The lowest beam must be the correct height above the floor. We
recommend the use of the SLP/SLC profile alignment aid to align the profiles
vertically and horizontally.
The alignment of the SLP transmitter unit can be performed with the aid of a
reflector. The reflector is positioned in front of the (SLPC(M)) receiving lens for the
upper light beam. When the system is turned on, the view from the SLP
transmitter is in the direction of the reflector. The transmitter should be adjusted
so that the red transmitter light is visible in the reflector. The upper fastening of the
transmitter must be secured in place. After that, the reflector is placed in front of
the lens for the lower light beam and adjusted by swiveling the transmitter laterally
as previously described. Then the SLPC(M) receiver unit is swiveled so that the
function display for all receiving lenses lights up continuously to indicate that the
light beams are optimally aligned.
If the red transmitter light cannot be observed properly (for example, with long
sensing ranges), an SLP laser alignment aid should be used.

6.2 Layout with adjustable mirrors

Adjustable mirrors deflect the path of protection fields and grids to offer protection
on more than one side using just a single transmitter/receiver pair. Each mirror
reduces the sensing range by no more than 15%.
The mirrors are arranged so that light beams from the transmitter can be deflected
to the receiver. To deflect the protection field through 90°, the mirror is positioned
at an angle below 45°.
When aligning the layout, ensure that all components are arranged vertically and
at the same height. To roughly align the mirror, turn it so that you can see the
receiver reflected in the mirror when looking at it with the transmitter behind you.
Aligning the mirrors is made easier by using the SLP laser alignment aid.
Make sure that the surfaces of the mirror are clean. The mirror must be cleaned
using a non-scratch detergent and lint-free cloth.

6.3 Functional testing

Testing the detection capability of the installed NCSE
The following tasks must be performed to test the detection capacity:
1. Remove all objects from the beam paths
2. Interrupt all light beams one after the other. The OSSD outputs must switch off
(red indicator lights up).
Testing the muting function (SLPCM only)
1. Check the layout of the muting sensors (it must not be possible for one person
to simultaneously activate 2 muting sensors continuously).
2. Check the function of the preset muting mode.
3. Check the position of the muting light.
4. Check the function using muting objects (does the muting function operate
reliably?)
5. Check the disable functions on the SLPCM (time monitoring) and emergency
muting.
Check the startup/restart interlock and startup enable
1. Interrupt one beam and then free all beams.
2. Output relays must remain disabled for startup lock and the indicator light for
startup readiness must be lit or the status display must show an A.
3. Actuate the startup enable contact for 0.05 s ... 1 s (RESTART).
OSSD outputs must turn on and the indicator light for operational
readiness must go out.
Testing the error enable connection (RESET)
1. Remove all objects from the beam path.
2. If there is a startup lock, activate the startup enable contact (RESTART).
3. The OSSD outputs must switch on.
4. Actuate the startup enable contact (RESET) for 0.05 s ... 1 s.
The OSSD outputs must switch off.
Testing the relay monitor
1. Interrupt the connection line between the external contact and the SLPC(M)
receiver unit.
2. Switch on the SLPC(M) receiver unit.
3. Read the status display of the SLPC(M).
4. If F is displayed, contact monitoring is active.
Reconnect the interrupted line.

Working principle of OSSDs

■ The two OSSDs are switched on under the following conditions:
• With active startup lock: The protective beams are free and startup
is enabled.
• Without startup lock: The protective beams are free.
■ The OSSDs remain switched on under the following conditions:
• No protective beam is interrupted.
• Muting is active while protective beams are interrupted (SLPCM
only).
■ The OSSDs are switched off under the following conditions:
• The protective beams are interrupted.
• With the muting function activated (SLPCM only), the protective
beams are interrupted while time monitoring has blocked the
muting sensors (flashing muting LED on the front plate).
• An error state is detected.
• The contact for error enable (RESET) is activated.

Maintenance and repair

7 Maintenance and repair

7.1 Maintenance
The safety light curtain is maintenance free.
The prescribed periodic checks must be performed and documented. The checks
must determine whether the components are fitted securely and whether the
optical surfaces are clean.

Note!
Use a damp, soft, lint-free cloth to clean the surfaces, especially the lens. Alcohol
or mineral spirits may be used as cleaning fluids. Other cleaning agents are not
permitted as they may damage the mirror surfaces.

7.2 Repair
The devices must not be repaired, changed or manipulated. If there is a defect,
the product must always be replaced with an original device.

Note!
If it appears that safe operation of the sensor system is no longer possible, it must
be taken out of operation and secured against inadvertent use.

Troubleshooting

8 Troubleshooting
8.1 Troubleshooting
Note!
Always carry out a function check on the device after troubleshooting.

Faults in the system result in the system switching to a safe locked status. The
OSSDs can then be turned off. A large number of errors will bring the system to a
state where errors are displayed on the receiver unit’s status display.
Standby output can indicate an error externally. In the event of failure, the output
switches on and off at a frequency of 1 Hz.
To acknowledge an error, the user presses the reset button for 0.03 s ... 1 s. The
SLPC(M) then either reverts to the initial state after a system test is successfully
performed, or stops in an error state with the following error display.

9.4 Periodic checks

The test intervals and scope of the periodic checks are determined according to
requirements.
A daily test is required if the OSSD outputs on the SLPC(M) receiver unit are
relays and the following is not guaranteed:
■ A protective field interruption occurs at least once per day
■ or the device is not turned on once each operating day
Testing
The test is performed as follows:
1. Make sure the protection field is free.
2. Activate the startup enable.
3. Interrupt the protection field inside the protection field range using the test
rod. A test rod of large enough size must be used.
4. Check the entire protection field at several points parallel to the transmitter or
receiver units, in particular in front of the transmitter and receiver and in the
center between the transmitter and receiver.
The OSSD outputs switch off. The indicator for the OSSD display must
change from green to red.
5. If the receiver unit does not have a fault status, the test is complete.

Note!
The periodic check of the safety functions from the plant where the SLPC(M)/SLP
system is installed must also include the functions of the NCSE. The proper
layout, installation, and required response time must be checked. Test records of
tests that have been performed must be kept and archived.

9.5.2 Adjustable mirror

Mirror for SLP safety light grid (2, 3, 4 beam)
Adjustable mirrors are used to protect hazardous areas on more than one side.
The type of mirror required depends on the sensing range.
Order codes for mirrors for SLP and SLC (2, 3 and 4-beam)

Deviation mirror order codes

Number of beams Sensing range < 15 m Sensing range > 15 m
2 SLP-2-M SLC-800-M
3 SLP-3-M SLC-1000-M
4 SLP-4-M SLC-1000-M

Note!
When determining the sensing range, remember to take into account that the light
path length increases by 15% for each mirror used.
Example
SLP-2 with one adjustable mirror
Distance between transmitter and mirror = 6 m
Distance between receiver and mirror = 8 m
Real length = 6 m + 8 m = 14 m
Range = real length / 85% = 14 m * 1.18 = 16.47 m

A SLC-800-M adjustable mirror is required.

9.5.6 Connecting cable

Angled connectors or cables with integrally cast angled connectors are
recommended to connect the cable to the M12 sockets on the front side of the
SLPC(M). A 5-pin connection should be made to connect an SLP transmitter with
4 beams. The M12 indicator light connection also requires a 5-pin connection. All
plug connections have 4 pins.
Connecting cables are not included in the delivery package for a safety light grid.
