Lesson Plan Title: Drastic pollinators for 6th graders

Concept / Topic To Teach: How did the dinosaurs live on earth? What ways did the dinosaurs of
your choice affect the ecosystem?

General Goal(s): Students use a 3D printer as well as learning how to present information to
the class. Students will know that a living creature needs to survive, such as food, water, shelter.
The way they interact with other animals and get familiar with the idea of the circle of life. As
well the way ecosystems work. Naming biotic and abiotic features.

Specific Objectives:Students will be able to create a physical model of their dinosaur

environment. Students will be able to present information about the lifestyle of a dinosaur.

Required Materials: 3D printer, computer

(Activity) Anticipatory Set (Lead-In):Students will use a three dimensional printer to create a
model of a dinosaur/ environment. Students can create any part of the dinosaur or the
environment to show the class. In addition students should create a handout, PowerPoint. They
will create an additional source of information to share with the class as they present. With
assistance from the teacher/ our aid students will collect data and create a visual
representation.
Step-By-Step Procedures: As a class we’ll discuss the lion king movie. The life cycle. And how
environments are just as affected by the things living in them as they are to us. We will start off
by watching the video then using the hand out students will find connections between nature
and bees. Students will learn about bees. How bees spread pollen on their fur. Students will
then be asked to use chrome books / the internet to gather research on their favorite dinosaur.
Each student should find out 5 ways that a dinosaur and/or the ecosystem affect each other.

Plan For Independent Practice:Students will continue to gather information for their
presentation. Gathering research. Students should also practice presenting. Students will also
use independent class time to build their model. Their model can be of the dinosaur, of its
environment, of the archaeological site where they found its bones. Each student will come up
in groups to learn how the 3D printer works. Then individual students will come up with an aid
and create something for their presentations. ( This would be after the technology was faster, or
where a school had access to more than one printer) designs will be sent to the printer and then
the following day students will review their creations making changes or additions to their
design.

Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set):During presentation I’ll pass out flashcards for students to
write down questions they have, at the end of the lesson as a closer we will discuss and answer
some of these questions. As well as asking what they learned.

Assessment Based On Objectives: The assessment will be based on the presentation of

information and what they present. Ex. Did they discuss at least 5 ways their dinosaurs affected
the ecosystem or the way the ecosystem/ environment affected the dinosaur? Students should
cover what they ate as the most important coverage/ connection. Secondly students should
cover prey/ predators. As well as if the dinosaur lays eggs. The overall assessment should
determine if students understand the connection between environment and animal and that a
student has at least 5 connections. Students should also relate their visuals to their presentation
information.

Possible Connections To Other Subjects: Science, environment, climate change, what animals
eat, history…what happened to dinosaurs, why are dinosaurs extinct. FOSSILS. Difference in
fossil fuels and fossils, Places where bones were found. How archaeologists affect the
environment.

Lesson discussion: An ecosystem is a geographic area where plants, animals, and other
organisms, as well as weather and landscape, work together to form a bubble of life.
Ecosystems contain biotic or living parts, as well as abiotic factors, or nonliving parts. Biotic
factors include plants, animals, and other organisms.
As pollinators, bees play a part in every aspect of the ecosystem. When a bee lands on a
flower, the hairs all over the bees' body attract pollen grains through electrostatic forces. Stiff
hairs on their legs enable them to groom the pollen into specialized brushes or pockets on their
legs or body, and then carry it back to their nest. They support the growth of trees, flowers, and
other plants, which serve as food and shelter for creatures large and small. Bees contribute to
complex, interconnected ecosystems that allow a diverse number of different species to coexist.
Without bees, they would have lower reproductive success. This too would alter ecosystems.
Beyond plants, many animals, such as the beautiful bee-eater birds, would lose their prey in the
event of a die-off, and this would also impact natural systems and food webs. The oldest fossil
bees date from about 100 million years ago, which means bees and dinosaurs lived together for
at least 35 million years, and possibly much longer.

Evidence indicates that dinosaurs became extinct at the boundary between the Cretaceous and
Paleogene eras, about 66 million years ago, at a time when there was worldwide environmental
change resulting from the impact of a large celestial object with the Earth and/or from vast
volcanic eruptions.Studying dinosaurs has played a key role in developing evolutionary theory
and other scientific concepts, such as plate tectonics and biogeography. All of these pursuits
arise as a result of humanity's innate curiosity to investigate how our world works and where we
fit within the natural world we see around us.

Instructions: After watching the video and going through the information discussed in class you
can now take free time to gather research- and create a short presentation about how your
dinosaur affected the ecosystem. You should find at least 5 ways in which your dinosaur
interacts with the ecosystem.

Part 2
Rubric Explanation / Example ( ways to explain to students)
Students will be graded out of 10 points for their presentations.
Each connection would be worth 2 points in total.
One point for listing/ naming a connection.
The additional point for explaining the connection.
Students will be graded out of 5 points for their representations. Minimum students should show
something about how the dinosaurs and the environment connect.
Ex. If their presentation focuses on the fossil they should present bones or the site they were
from. Each presentation should show some part of the dinosaur body. Ex. If students focus on
dinosaurs as predators they can present a model of the dinosaur's head and teeth (showing
how important this structure is to the way the dinosaurs survived in addition to how the circle of
life works, the dinosaurs they ate also ate this and again how it affects the environment.)

Rubric : Each environment + dinosaur ecosystem interaction students name is one point
and an/ example of this connection is an additional point. 10 points.
In addition 5 points will be given for having and explaining the connection between visual
and presentation of information worth
2 points as well as showing understanding of how an ecosystem works worth 2 points.
Last point is if the student has a visual at all. Total 10 points
( written rubric)

• Special Needs Accommodations: Explain how you can adapt your lesson plan for a student
with special needs in your classroom. Students with special needs will get specific
assistance from teachers with creating the visual representation. If a student struggles
with reading/ seeing with a disability such as dyslexia, we as a class will review
instruction and handout together. Most of our lessons will be classroom discussion. We
will have an as calm classroom discuss as well where students will have an opportunity
to write their own notes. I’d also provide daily notes for students to review if they miss
parts of the lesson. I’d pass out a copy of the lesson plan just like this to students to use
when needed.
