P1251 UDDU - Issue 1 - Data Sheet - Inc Drawings
P1251 UDDU - Issue 1 - Data Sheet - Inc Drawings
The P1251 Universal Digital Display Unit (UDDU) is housed in a DIN 43700 pattern (Din96 x 96)
case and reads a variety of IEC 61162-1:2000, NMEA 0183 messages in order to display the
following information:
• Log Speed
• SOG (Speed Over Ground)
• Log Distance Total
• Log Trip Distance & Total Distance
• Relative Wind Speed
• True Wind Speed
• Relative Wind Direction
• True to Ship (TTS) Wind Direction
• True Wind Direction
• Atmospheric Pressure and Pressure Trend
• Relative Humidity
• Air Temperature
• Water Temperature
• Heading True
• Heading Magnetic
• Heading True (Analogue Display)
• Heading Magnetic (Analogue Display)
• COG (Course Over Ground TRUE)
• Dew Point.
The indicator has one 256*64 pixel OLED Graphic display, 4 Touch switches, for display mode and
illumination control, 2 NMEA 0183 inputs and 2 NMEA 0183 outputs.
The P1251 UDDU will accept and re-transmit valid IEC 61162-1: 2000 (NMEA 0183) messages with
the following formatters; VHW, VBW, VTG, VLW, MWV, MWD, XDR, MTW, HDG, HDT, HDM,
JLG (proprietary) and GGA. LEDs, visible at the rear face of the unit, provide additional information
for customer confidence and diagnostic purposes.
Serial messages, requiring inputting into the P1251 UDDU, must first be suitably multiplexed into
one, or two, serial data streams before connection.
19 “MODES” of operation are provided; one for each of the above parameters and are accessed by
use of the mode touch switches [<] [>].
The display has “illumination” up [∆] and down [∇] touch switches, which allow dimming to
extinction. The indicator is splash-proof but is not waterproof.
If switched off, the previous mode and level of illumination are retained in “flash” memory.
The display can be readily fitted into a panel with a cut-out conforming to that shown on drawing
3317-A3-11, and secured in position using the two clamps provided, one at the top and one at the
bottom of the indicator casing. This necessitates access to the rear of the panel concerned in order to
fit and tighten the securing clamps provided. Removal of the indicator for servicing etc. would also
require such rear panel access.
In the chosen fitted position, access to the touch switches along the bottom of the P1251 fascia is
necessary for the control of the unit.
CABLING
Cable connection into the P1251 UDDU is normally via free terminal blocks fitted to the terminals
soldered directly onto the rear CPU board and which project through the rear panel of the instrument.
When using screw terminal connections, a two core cable (0.5mm CSA) is required for connection of
the 24vDC power supply.
Two core (twisted pair) cable/s (0.5mm CSA) with overall screen is/are required for serial data
connection. This cable specification applies both to the NMEA 0183 data stream/s, input from the
talker/s concerned, and the NMEA 0183 output “re-transmit facility” that is also available for use, if
required.
Input RJ45 and output RJ45 connectors are also available at the rear of the indicator. These would
normally be used for “daisy chaining” additional, local, displays of the same generic type.
Touch Keys
There are four touch keys on the P1251. The keys operate by a charge transfer sensing method. A firm
touch with a bare finger in the sensing area of the key is sufficient to actuate a key press.
UP Key
The UP key Increases the OLED display brightness and the Blue Key backlight illumination. There
are 12 levels of brightness from off to full brightness.
Each key press increases the brightness by 1 level.
DOWN Key
The DOWN key decreases the OLED display brightness and the Blue Key backlight illumination.
There are 12 levels of brightness from full brightness to off.
Each key press decreases the brightness by 1 level.

Now Rising - The Barometric Pressure has been falling or steady in the preceding three hours, but at
the time of the reading was definitely rising.
Rising Slowly - The Barometric Pressure has increased by 0.1 to 1.5 milliBar in the preceding three
hours.

time of the reading was definitely falling.
Falling Slowly - The Barometric Pressure has decreased by 0.1 to 1.5 milliBar in the preceding three
hours.
Falling - The Barometric Pressure has decreased by 1.6 to 3.5 milliBars in the preceding three hours.

During operation the instrument retains 3 hours of historical pressure data sampled at 10 minute
intervals.
Note that on switch on, all the instrument’s historical pressure data is set to a default value of 1000
miliBar
Because no historical pressure data is available at switch on, the pressure trend indication cannot be
relied upon during the first three hours of operation.

Any of the following IEC61162-1 / NMEA 0183 messages, seen at any of the 2 input channels, are
checked for validity and are re transmitted to both output channels at a frequency of 1 Hz by the
instrument.
MWV, MWD, VLW, VHW, VBW, HDT, HDM, HDG, VTG, JLG, GGA, XDR and MTW.
Log Speed
Log Speed, is obtained from the NMEA 0183 messages, VHW or VBW:-
If both VHW and VBW are seen at any of the input channels then the Log Speed present in the VHW
message will take precedence over Log speed in the VBW message.

Dew Point
Each reading is identified by the Sensor ID number, which is the last field in the group of 4, as
follows.
Sensor ID = 0 - Air Temperature
Sensor ID = 1 - Water temperature
Sensor ID = 2 - Humidity
Sensor ID = 3 - Pressure
Sensor ID = 4 - Dew Point
Note; if water temperature is being received in both XDR and MTW messages, then data in the MTW
message will take precedence.
Wind Data
The P1251 accepts and displays wind data from NMEA 0183 MWV and MWD messages.
Heading Data
The P1251 accepts and displays heading data from NMEA 0183 HDG HDT HDM and VHW
messages.
Note: If heading data is being received from two or more NMEA 0183 message types, the following
precedence is applied.

SERVICING:
FAULT FINDING:
Any loss, or interruption, of input serial data will cause the associated displays to revert to show
“dashes” as per the information provided in the “Display Mode” sections.
In the first instance, remove the P1251 indicator from the panel concerned and check the LEDs at the
rear panel of the unit. Check “CPU OK” LED to ensure processor is running. Dependent upon status
of “DATA IN” LED, check all connected “Talkers” as appropriate.
If the problem is found to be a loose input NMEA 0183 connection, re-connect the cable core/s
concerned. Incoming serial data will be restored to the display and digital readings will recommence.
If associated talkers are transmitting correct serial data and if connections at the talker/s and at the
P1251 unit are satisfactory, then continuity of the serial data transmission cable, from the talker itself,
must be checked.
If the fault is found to be within the P1251 UDDU itself, the unit must be returned for investigation /
repair.
