FUTURISM

Futurism Art- Futurism, Italian Futurismo, Russian Futurizm, early 20th


century artistic movement centred in Italy that emphasized the dynamism,
speed, energy, and power of the machine and the vitality, change, and
restlessness of modern life.

 Futurist painters made the rhythm of their repetitions of lines.


 Inspired by some photographic experiments, they were breaking
motion into small sequences, and using the wide range of angles
within a given time-frame all aimed to incorporate the dimension of
time within the picture.

Key ideas on Futurism Involve;


Fascination by problems of representing modern experiences and starving to
have their art pieces evoke all kinds of sensations, not just the sense of
sight. The futurist also bring to mind the noise, heat and even how the
subject smells.
It was somehow influenced by the Cubism ideologies and fascinated with the
new technology such as photography, animation and cinema and etc.
This technology was a significant influence on their approach in showing
movement in painting. The futurist artworks usually present abstract
concepts with rhythmic and pulsating qualities.
POP ART
What is Pop Art?
 Pop Art- is art that is based on popular culture and mass media.
 Reflects current values of society/culture
 Uses images borrowed by advertising, photography, comic strips and
other mass media sources.

 Pop Art is influenced by two dimensional images.

 Mechanical Production

- Screen printing
- Machine produced
- Emphasis on mass production

The Pop Art artist moved away from Abstract Expressionism which was the
“in” style of art in the 50s. The abstract expressionist evoked emotions,
feelings and ideas through formal elements such as:
 Line
 Color
 Shape
 Form
 Texture

Pop artist used common images from everyday culture as their source
including:
 Advertisements
 Consumer goods
 Celebrities
 Photographs
 Comic strips
Pop artist used bold, flat colors and hard edge compositions adopted from
commercial designs like those found in:
 Billboards
 Murals
 Magazines
 Newspapers

ROY LICHTENSTEIN
 Born on October 27, 1923
 Began first pop paintings using cartoons images and techniques
derived from appearance of commercial printing.
- Include use of advertising suggesting consumerism that reflected
homelife.
Another Famous pop artist is Roy Lichtenstein
- He liked to appropriate images from comic books.
Lichtenstein also used “sound” captions from comic books to create dynamic
art.

Wayne Thiebaud- created pop art about everyday objects like cake,
bubblegum and lipstick.
Thiebaud was known for outlining shapes in his artwork with red, blue, and
yellow instead of black.
