ARChi:An Augmented Reality Application to create and
learn chiral compounds
Background on chiral chemistry
• A molecule is chiral it has two forms that are mirror images of each other
but otherwise identical.
• Chemists call these enantiomers or optical isomers. Because the
difference between right and left hands is easy to understand, chemists
call enantiomers either 'right-' (R configuration) or 'left-handed' (S
configuration).

• The R or S configuration can be assigned based on the preference order

of the alpha group.Alpha group is the functional group directly attached
to the chiral carbon.
Problems faced by the learners
• Visualization of three-dimensional structures
• Unplanned and unsystematic way of teaching stereochemistry leads to lack of motivation and frustration
to student
• Drawing 2D molecular structure and then correlating those 2D structures to their respective 3D image
either by ball-stick model
Libraries and Frameworks used
• Unity game engine
• Vuforia AR library
• Firebase (Database)
• Visual Studio (c# code)
Features of ARChi
• Create your custom chiral compound and save it to the database.
• Take a quiz to check the knowledge in chiral chemistry.

Computational
Thinking

“Computational thinking involves solving

problems, designing systems, and

understanding human behaviour, by

drawing on the concepts fundamental to

computer science” (Wing, 2006, p. 33).

The Four Cornerstones of Computational Thinking
Computational Thinking and Programming

• Teaching programming exposes students to computational thinking

• Programming involves problem-solving using computer science
concepts such as abstraction and decomposition

Taipei 1001: A Virtual Reality Experience
Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) ?

• Also known as Harmonic Absorbers or Seismic Dampers

• It’s Mechanical devices used in mitigating seismic damage to the tall buildings

• It do so by dissipating energy generated by strong dynamic excitations resulting

in an efficient decrease in the building’s vibrations.

• More economical and effective compared to improving overall structural

properties of building
About Taipei 1001
• It is a VR – based educational application.

• Provides an interactive education on working of TMDs and its

use in mitigating building vibrations under external excitations.

• Users will be controlling structural parameters and causing

virtual catastrophic disaster to find optimal damping
effectiveness.

• The models design and development are inspired from the

iconic Taipei – 101, Taiwan
Pendulum TMD

• A cable-supported PTMD is advantageous over the

conventional TMD for high-rise buildings because its
frequency can be re-tuned by changing the cable length.

• Usually attached to the top of the building in order to

increase the effective damping
Gameplay
• Players will be using a control panel inside the virtual
environment (VE),

Control Panel Structural Parameters like mass

and length of TMD, stiffness of
the structure, etc.

Activate or deactivate a
disaster at a time.
Gameplay

Disasters will be caused using different action mechanisms by users.

• Wind blowing – typhoons are generated by blowing on the

virtual building via a microphone. And the audio signal
amplitude will decide the strength of typhoon, divided in three
different levels.

• Hand Motion – earthquakes are generated from back and forth

motion of hand in the same plane. And the rate of change of this
motion velocity decides the strength of earthquakes, again
divided in three different levels.
