Introduction

How important of a role has the Media played in the history of Globalization? How have

these two concepts influenced each other throughout the existence of humanity? Globalization

has always been a highly debated topic among different scholars as they argue for different takes

on the subject matter. The term always seems to mean different things, making it challenging to

define. However, media has a more straightforward definition. We know that it has played a great

role in the growth of globalization, Manfred Steger, a scholar, describes it as the growth and

escalation of social world relations and consciousness across world time and space. Five time

periods effectively captures the subject of globalization and media. Due to the nature of

development, there are always drawbacks or adverse consequences on either us or the

environment. The evolutionary processes for globalization and media are not always advancing.

Despite this, we still choose to focus on what is best for the majority and the potential benefits

that it may have. We believe that Media and Globalization are two sides of the same coin, one

cannot exist without the other. As media evolves, globalization evolves alongside it. Our topic

delves into the formal definitions of globalization and media, as well as discussing its

development through significant time periods.

Summary of Topic

The topic “Globalization and Media” tackles the meaning of globalization and media. It

shows how media and its evolution influences and affects the process of globalization. The topic

also covers the different historical periods in which media has evolved from, and how its

evolution made room for global opportunities and international connectivity. Globalization paved

the way into achieving and reaching the contemporary world. Everything that we have at this

exact moment only exists because of globalization, may it be advantageous or disadvantageous.

May it be one or the other, it is up to us to decide what is best for us in this ever fast changing

world.

I. Definition and History of Globalization

Globalization is defined as a set of multiple, uneven, and sometimes overlapping

historical processes, including economics, politics, and culture that have combined with the

evolution of media technology to create the conditions under which the globe itself can now be

understood as an ‘imagined community’.

It is a highly debated topic since different scholars have various takes on the history and

origin of globalization. Here are some of the different scholars’ opinions on the history of

globalization:

It began a few decades ago in the late 1900s, when advances in media and transportation

technology truly globalized the world.

4
Globalization began a few hundred years ago. They pair globalization with the rise of

modernity in the Enlightenment or with the age of European exploration – Columbus’ arrival in

America is often used as a marker for globalization.

II. Definition of Media and the Evolution of Media and Globalization

Media is a means of conveying/sharing information. It has a great role in the

development of globalization.

Harold Innis (1950) – Media is divided into 3 periods: Oral, Print, and Electronic

Period.

James Lull (2000) – Media is divided into 4 periods: Oral, Print, Electronic, and Digital

Period.

Terhi Rantanem (2005) - Media is divided into 6 periods: Oral, Script, Print, Wired

Electronic, Wireless Electronic, and Digital Period.

Although in the year 2005, media was divided into 6 periods, the scholars’ decided that it

only took 5 periods to capture the essence of the evolution of media and how it affected

globalization: Oral, Script, Print, Electronic, and Digital Period.

The 5 Periods of Media

1. Oral Communication

● The oldest and most enduring form of media.

● Communication through the mouth.

5
2. Scripts

● Early forms of writing

● Information can be passed on and not be forgotten.

3. Print/Printing Press

● It started the ‘information revolution'.

● Information was not anymore controlled by the rich and the

powerful.

4. Electronic Media

● They require electromagnetic energy – electricity to use.

● In the 19th century, new media came and scholars called these

electronic media.

5. Digital Media

● Digital media refers to any communication media that operate in

conjunction with various encoded machine-readable data formats.

● Digital media can be created, viewed, distributed, modified,

listened to, and preserved on a digital electronics device.

6
III. Role of Media in Globalization and Two Faces of Media and Globalization’s

Partnership

Role of Media in Globalization

· Primary Carriers of Culture

· Channel for Cultural Interactions

· Cultural Lobbyists

· Root of Hybrid Culture

· Herald of Cultural Diversity

Two Faces of Media and Globalization’s Partnership

Marshall McLuhan

· Coined the term "global village"

· "The one responsible for transforming the world into a global village with

high hopes that the global village evokes community, kinship, cooperation, and

fraternity"

Lewis Mumford

· "Media technology is sometimes used not to better the world but to exploit

the world in the pursuit of property, profit, and power."

Analysis of Topic

The term media and globalization had always correlated each other since the earliest of

time even before the terms were invented. The media industry is one of the great catalysts that

speeds up the progress of globalization as it allows the proliferation of global trade without much

concern on traditional political borders among countries.

Throughout the report, we tackled a lot of topics that shaped globalization on what it is

today. But to further explain and analyze the relationship between media and globalization, we

will have to look at it from a different angle by answering one of the most controversial

questions which is “Could globalization have evolved without the flow of information (Media)?

First, we must understand the absence of media in globalization and its implication in the

globalization process. Arguably, globalization came after media that started to develop rapidly

due to its interaction, some also say that globalization could strive without media and are two

separate things with different roles but would have remained stagnant without its influence.

Through the course of the evolution of media, both ideologies have been working hand in hand

to further enhance and sustain itselves.

But things are different now. At the start of the contemporary era it became more

apparent, the power between media and globalization has started to shift. Most globalization

theorists believe that the media has played an important role in the acceleration of globalization.

With the increase in the importance of economic, cultural and technological integration between

countries, it has a great impact on our society’s personal lives. The media and communication

industries are now the leading sector in facilitating overall globalization.

8
In the first place, the role of telecommunication is critical to globalized production

strategies. It is inconceivable that the pace and depth of globalization could have been sustained

over the past decades in the absence of sophisticated telecommunications networking. In other

words, the media has now become the key role in sustaining globalization and will be further

enhancing it in the years to come.

Taking everything into account, the answer to the question is no. Technically,

globalization is a product or an existence that is ever enhanced by the constant evolution of

media that is always happening and will not stop until any trace of media is present especially in

this time of advanced and automated technology.
