Properties Leafing Non-Leafing

Particle Particle align themselves Particles align themselves randomly

Alignment parallel to both substrate & through out the coating film as it dries.
surface of a coating as it dries Polychromatic effect - looks different at
different angles

Fatty Acid Stearic acid used in milling Oleic acid coats individual particles (better
wetting) to allow random orientation of
pigment. Aluminium pigments can be used
with other colored pigments

Characteristic High Reflectivity (90%). Brighter Very good Adhesion. Huge varieties of
but Poorer Rub (abrasion) shades & effect. Better abrasion resistance
Resistance and Poorer Recoating and over coating

End Use Maintenance, Corrosion Automotive, General Industrial,

Resistant, Heat Resistant, Roof Furniture, Can Coating, Parts and
Coating, Furnace Accesories
Resin Type Properties and Use
Akyds Based on long oil alkyd with high % of hydroxyls frequently used.
2K alkyd based PU, for wood finishes.
Polyester Hydroxyl (OH) rich with low acid value exists. Required high
amount of Isocyanate. This provides a highly durable, chemical
resistant and hard coating. Tightly knit they provide good
moisture resistance. More expensive. Used for high performance
transport finish and marine and air craft. 2K finish or stoving 1K PU
common.
Acrylic Most widely used. Hydroxy ethyl and hydroxy propyl
methacrylates popular. Provide excellent weather ability, gloss,
color retention, good chemical and moisture resistance. Can be
tinted easily and pigmented. Not suitable for water immersion.
Used in car OEM and refinish.
Hexamethylenediisocyanate (HDI)
