Industrial visit to Oil and Natural Gas Corporation of India

This report is in regard to an industrial visit to Regional Geoscience Laboratory (RGL) ONGC.
It was organized by Geology department of Parul institute of Applied Sciences, Parul
University. RGL ONGC is located In Vadodara, Gujarat. The purpose of visit was to explore
and learn the industrial application of the concepts being taught in the subject.
There were total of 8 labs, categorised under Chemistry lab and Geology lab.
Chemistry labs: -
1. Geochemistry Lab: - Purpose of this lab was to check the quality and content of the
source rock from the reservoir. We observed working of two machines: - GCMS ( Gas
Chromatography Mass Spectrometer) and Rock Eval-6 used for the analysis.
2. Gas and Surface Geochemical Lab: - Purpose of this lab was to analyse the sample for
gas from wells in virgin areas, through surface geochemical survey and Gas
Chromatography to separate gas components from the samples.
3. Water and Environmental Lab: - Purpose of this lab was primary, secondary and
tertiary treatment of water associated with oil from the reservoir. We came to know
about shock treatment for bacterial resistance also the use of fluoroscope.
Treatment plans to inhibit corrosion using acid corrosion inhibitor. We learned about
how dynamic condition of reservoir were created in the lab.
4. Oil Lab: - Purpose of this lab was the analysis of the crude oil extracted from the
reservoir. We learned about the apparatus used for the purification of the crude oil
named Dean Stark Apparatus which worked on fractional distillation principal. We
learned how the analysis of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) is done.
5. Petrophysical Lab: - Purpose of this lab was to study the rocks based on void spaces
present in them. Here the characterisation of reservoir rock was done. Four
processes were involved Sampling, Processing of sample by core plugging machine,
Cleaning of sample, Use of Oven which makes core plug finally ready for analysis. We
learned about petrophysical properties of rocks namely porosity, permeability,
resistivity, capillary pressure studies.
6. Sedimentology Lab: - We observed three type of core sample in this lab.
Conventional core (initially of 9m and further divided into 1 m sections for detailed
analysis, side wall core samples and cutting samples for detailed samples. We came
to know about the use of X-ray diffraction machine, and Electron microscope.
7. Palynology Lab: - Purpose of this lab was basically the extraction of microfossil like
fossilised pollen grain. It was done by acid treatment it involved recurring acid
treatment on soil sample and ultimately extraction of pollen unaffected by the acid
treatment due to the presence of sporopollenin ( hardest known organic material).
8. Palaeontology Lab: - Purpose of thus lab was analysis of macro and microfossil. We
observed how sorting is done using sieving methods. Also we observed different
fossil samples under microscope.
