In the Dark

It was dark. The world was so dark. You can barely see what’s around you. The only thing that’s
giving a bit of light was the moon above the mystic clouds. Even so, it’s still not enough for Pedro.
“Why does it have to be so dark?”, he whispered.
Slowly, Pedro crawled between the alley. He can smell the mud. He can taste the mist. The place
was so eerie. So quiet. No sound or anything at all.
Pedro was trying to be very careful with his move. He cannot make a noise, or else he will be in
danger.
He sat back and leaned against the wall. He looked at his hands, though it was dark but he can
glimpse a bit. His hands were covered with bruises. He’s hurt but surprisingly, he can’t feel a thing.
Pedro was so tired already, but he cannot stop. Not this time. He needs to cross the bridge. That’s
the only way out.
He reached out his backpack and took out the tiny flashlight that he had been saving. It was not a
good idea to use it. Lights attract the Creepers. It’s what they call the zombies. But there’s nothing he
can do. Pedro has to use it to be able to see the road going to the bridge. The darkness was so
blinding. A little bit of torch would be helpful.
He closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
“Please God, help me.” Pedro prayed silently.
Holding the tiny flashlight, with both hands. He stood up, leaned against the wall, tightened the straps
of his backpack and readied his self for the big run.
“On three…” Pedro mumbled. 1, 2, 3…. He turned on the flashlight and run.
Pedro run as fast as he can pointing the light towards the road.
Pedro silently screamed. Runnnnnnn!!!!!!
Pedro ran the fastest run he has ever done in his life!
There it is! He can see the bridge now. Just a 100-meter shy away.
Run Pedro, RUN! – as if someone was cheering for him.
But as he was getting closer, he can hear the Creepers chasing him from behind.
Pedro looked back a bit and saw hundreds of them.
Roaaaaarrrr!!!! Roared the Creepers.
The wind blew so cold he can’t feel a thing anymore. Pedro was so scared and nervous, but his
adrenaline was pumping so fast as well.
He was almost there by the bridge when suddenly, a Creeper jump out in front of him.
“Roaaaaaaaaarrrrrr!!!!” said the Creeper, its fangs are out.
The Creeper tried to grab him but Pedro was lucky to scaped it.
Pedro reached the bridge, he continued to run. But he got distracted and did not see the huge hole in
the middle of the bridge.
He slipped and fell off. Woooossshh!
“Aaahhhhh….!!!!!” Pedro screamed so loud.
Bang! He felt the huge fall.
It woke him up.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
“Pedro! What are you doing?! You idiot! Wake up now! You are late already for school!” Pedro’s
Mom, Aling Maria was banging the door. Yelling.
Pedro got up and opened the door. He was greeted with Aling Maria shouting, whilst both her hands
on the waist. A typical Filipino Mom when they are angry.
“What did I tell you about locking doors? Ha?!” Aling Maria shouting while pointing at him.
“Alright, alright. I’m sorry. I’m up now Mom.” Pedro said. Still half asleep.
Aling Maria has a very strict rule in the house of ‘no locking doors’, her reasoning? In case of
emergency.
“Okay! C’mon now! Hurry up! I need to go somewhere after dropping you off to school!” Aling Maria
continued, still yelling.
“Okay, okay. Jeeez!”, Pedro said while scratching his head.
Aling Maria left and Pedro closed the door.
He sat down at the bed corner for a bit.
Damn! I’m glad it was just a dream. Pedro said to himself.
Pedro thought that watching Zombie movies before going to bed was not a good idea.
He sighed of relief and went to the bathroom to get ready.
