08 Pre-Laboratory: Gases (Intro)

Instructions
Open the simulation by clicking this link (PhET Simulation: Gases (Intro)), access the
"Laws" segment of the simulation, and answer the following questions (5 items x 10 points):
1. Describe what happens when the following conditions are made to the tank that is filled to the
brim with hydrogen gas (the small red particles) :
a. Volume is held constant

At 5.8 atm and 50 particles, there are 71 wall collisions of gas molecules in 10
picosecond at 10.0nm width.

b. Temperature is held constant

At 5.8 atm and 50 particles, there are 87 wall collisions of gas molecules in 10
picosecond at 10.0nm width.

c. Pressure is held constant

i. Volume can be adjusted

At 5.8 atm and 50 particles, there are 79 wall collisions of gas molecules in 10
picosecond at 10.0nm width.

ii. Temperature can be adjusted

At 5.8 atm and 50 particles, there are 96 wall collisions of gas molecules in 10
picosecond at 10.0nm width.

2. Why do gases behave in this manner?

Because the movement of gas particles is random and straight-line. Therefore, these collisions
are elastic, meaning they do not result in a net loss of energy.
