Geometric Design Criteria for Urban Streets Magdi M. E. Zumrawi ' Abstract The objective ofthis paper is to assist in establishing a guide to the geometric design of urban streets in Sudan, The design of new roads and enhancement of existing roads using a unified code of highway design applicable jn Sudan is quite important. The basic geometric design criteria inclide design speed, sight distances, and oad’s cross-sectional elements, horizontal and vertical alignments in addition to roads intersections. The use of specific design criteria at a particular location should be made on the basis of actual studies of the location, ‘The recommended values of geometric design criteria for urban streets are within the range of the desirable standards in most of the international highway design manuals. To check the validity of the suggested guidelines to suit Sudan, field work of three existing roads in Khartoum was carried out. The results obtained cleatly indicated that these guidelines are applicable in Sudan, a GoD Spee Sad GM pat Gl Sage baal SA ott pall dae} Aral Se ge iad panel Le pl Jas GAL patil peal) Cae os pal yy pn ain Nagel GB Abs Sey saya hd Mad La) State a SR Gp LD HAL AL, My NN oul « a hall atl gL aio « yy iL Ca pi GD yl pall Hota a Sl lof QB ld Cha le LEY Ge aN ne aha pa SES le cae sal La si ppl sn Sp HY ge ge Sl. al hl pga LA GY a Oa pe punta Bead AS y Lye i Can yy pI) dy le 1.
