Introduction

Researchers have identified the biological mechanism that explains why some people
experience abdominal pain when they eat certain foods. This is nowadays diagnosed as Irritable
Bowel Syndrome also known as IBS. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder that
affects the large intestine. Signs and symptoms include cramping, abdominal pain, bloating,
gas, diarrhea or constipation, or both. IBS is a chronic condition that you'll need to manage long
term.

First Discovered
Osler, who first described the condition in 1892, coined the term mucous colitis. The term
“irritable colon” first appeared in published research in 1929 when Jordan and Kiefer used it to
describe a colonic musculoneural disturbance present in 30% of gastroenterology outpatients.
Irritable colon described abdominal pain and disordered defaecation; it thus had a meaning
similar to its present one.

Symptoms
Abdominal pain, cramping or bloating that is related to passing a bowel movement changes the
appearance of a bowel movement. Changes in how often you are having a bowel movement.

How is the anatomy and knowledge of the systems used to help diagnose and treat these
conditions

Anatomy is obviously essential for surgeons but also has value for anyone who performs an
invasive procedure on a patient; carries out emergency procedures; examines radio-logical
imaging; performs a physical examination of a patient; refers a patient to another doctor, or
explains a procedure to a patient. Anatomy and Physiology provide basic knowledge about the
human body. It helps in clearing the fundamental concepts as to how our bodies function. With
the help of the classes of anatomy and physiology, one gets to learn not only the theoretical
concepts but practical functionalities of the human body too.

Latest Scientific Research on IBS

New research has found that a diet low in fermented carbohydrates has improved certain gut
symptoms and improved health-related quality of life for sufferers of inflammatory bowel
disease. Furthermore, despite decades and decades of research, there is still no cure for this
chronic condition, frustrating both patients and physicians. However one solution might be
viable, intestinal stem cell transplantation might be an effective tool in the treatment of IBS.
