Artistic Statement

My work explores a close relationship between culture and dance, and it incorporates the ways

through which the community can do better. Therefore, for me, dance is a way of living. The

influence of the social norms and the barriers which are present in the society are related to the

minorities. These social barriers, which are present in the society for the racial minorities and

females, influence my will to do more so I can become a pioneer for the people around me. I

practice in a continuous manner with my focus on jazz skills. I put effort into my footwork, barre

work and on my jumps and leaps so that while being on the stage, I won’t lose my balance and

make a mistake. With a continuous routine, this has enabled me to put a firm posture on my body

and also has made my back strong to bear the pressure of skillful dance. The highlights of my

performance are the well-incorporated and calculated steps with higher strength and facial

expressions that put emphasis on my performance.

Not only this, I take out time to practice other types of dances such as modern and dances of

African Diaspora. In this way, I am able to create a balance between the modern dance form to

match the pace of the modern dancers and my cultural dances, which keeps my hold to the

glorious grounds of my history. All of my performances are bound to create this specific

relationship to either side so that the audience is able to find a piece of resemblance and relation

to it as this provides meaning to my dance. Besides this, the charity work which I do is also

based on community awareness and providing other young and emerging artists with support to

stand strong in the world and find their real strengths. Therefore the purpose of my dance is to

increase awareness in other people and relate to different perspectives.
