Reflection/Argumentative Essay

From my perspective, the current Philippine generation is a generation that sympathize and greatly
acknowledges the works of our heroes, past presidents, and important people who greatly helped our
country from the past. However, the reason why this generation does not comprehend our nationalism is
because it is not clearly presented, taught, and shown to the youth’s eyes and ears. The use of studying
Filipino is not just to show how Filipinos are dedicated to their culture but it is also a way to understand
the past, our past. Unfortunately, not all schools delivered the intention. This is why the education in the
Philippines is of low-quality because even the language that is so often use is being taught carelessly.
Vocabulary is an essential subject that is needed especially understanding the works of Jose Rizal and
other heroes but, until now, as college students, our vocabulary is the same as of a elementary student.
This is one of the reasons why students don’t have the motivation to study Filipino as a subject when they
don’t understand it. I emphasized the importance of FIlipino subject because it is what will benefit the
youth in interpreting Rizal’s works and relate to current situations/issues but, they don’t seem to be able to
relate each other which is why the youth finds it difficult to learn nationalism.

In addition, in the current world where technology advances, I believe that the youth prioritizes current
affairs than past reflections/history. This is to say that learning Jose Rizal has become a necessity than an
inspiration or motivation to learn. Teaching nationalism should not be taught the same throughout the
years as generation passes so is the awareness of our history changes. Maybe, start with rather than Rizal
but our history itself. To properly teach nationalism is not from works of one person, but the whole
country. Personally, learning about our nationalism shouldn’t be based only on the work and life of Jose
Rizal. I understand the importance and the representation of Rizal in our country however, the history and
life of other heroes are as significant as Rizal’s. Even if the youth is taught the works of Rizal, by the end
of day, do they really understand him? Does teaching his works enough to show camaraderie or
patriotism? Because if not, then there is something wrong with the curriculum or how the law itself is
ineffective.
