1. Why should people be encourage to engage in home or backyard animal raising projects?
Filipino families are fond of raising animals in their backyard for food and for additional family
income. These include poultry , swine , goats , cattle , sheep and rabbit.
2. What are the advantages and benefits from animal raising?
Farm animal raising provides many benefits. These are the following:
Poultry and livestock production is a very good income generating project.
Meat and eggs are body-building foods that contribute to a well- balanced diet.
Cattle is not so hard and delicate to raise. All you need is a pasture, a fence , water
supply , salt for minerals and the control of pests and diseases. Cattles are useful farm
animals. They also supply meat and milk.
Goat raising is the easiest to handle. Just bring the goat where there are plenty of grass.
Goat meat is considered a delicacy For ilocanos.
Rabbit raising started as a mere hobby. At present , rabbits are raised for their meat.
They require only a small space with minimal equipment and expenses to breed them.
3. What factors should you consider when planning for a poultry and livestock project?
When planning a poultry and livestock project, choose a good location. For family consumption,
all you need is about two or three cages and a shed to protect the chicken from rain and strong
wind. A pig pen which measure about 2 x 1 ½ meters wide with 1 ½ meters in height and strong
enough to keep the pigs from escaping will suffice. For commercial , the size of the poultry
house and the pig pen will vary depending on the number of chicks and hogs to be raised.
4. What are the common types of breeds of poultry and swine?
Raising swine is a very profitable project. Swine breeders prefer hybrid piglets for a start. In
selecting the piglets, you should choose an active young pig with a long body and short legs.
You should buy already castrated young animals for faster growth . Be sure the hogs have been
vaccinated against hog cholera and plague and should have been treated for worms before you
buy them. There is an additional price for all this different treatments but they will insure
continued growth and freedom from illness.
Cattle Breeds like poultry and swine , have several varieties or breeds. These are the Philippine
cattle , the American Brahman, the red shindig , the Santa Gertudes, the Hellore, and the
Therparker.
