THEORY OF SELF

2 Parts of Self:

 Self-awareness
 Self-image

- Our bodies age biologically, but the self is

somethings that emerges through social
interactions.

- We develop self as we continually interact

with other people, through reflecting on that
interaction, to think about how others are
perceiving you and helps you generate an image
of yourself.

Self-image – recognizing how others are

perceiving us.

Imitation- we constantly put ourselves in the

shoes of another and think about how they are
seeing this event.

Generalized others – Internalized the

widespread cultural norms, mores, and
expectations of behavior.

Self-aware- we become self-aware by taking the

role of other.

THE “I” and “ME” of the SELF

“I”- it is the one who is being spontaneous,

doing things in the world.

“Me”- and object, the aggregate combined

image of yourself that was given to you through
interacting with society.
