Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring
Illustrative Example:

2
The quadratic equation x + 4x = 5 can be solved by factoring using the following procedure:

2
Step 1. Write the equation in standard form: x + 4x – 5 = 0
Step 2. Factor the quadratic polynomial: (x + 5) (x – 1)= 0
Step 3. Set each factor equal to 0: (x +5=0) or (x-1=0)
Step 4. Solve each equation: x = -5 or x = 1
Step 5. Write the solution set: { -5, 1}
Each member of the solution set can be checked by substituting for x in the original equation.
Let x = -5 Let x = 1
2 2
x + 4x = 5 x + 4x = 5
2 2
(-5) +4(-5)=5 (1) +4(1)=5
25 - 20 = 5 1+4 =5
5=5 5=5
