What is It

5
Leedly (1997) defines research as the systematic process of collecting and
analyzing information (data) in order to increase our understanding of the
phenomenon with which we are concerned or interested. It is an activity or process
through which we attempt to systematically and with the support of data, give an
answer to a question, the resolution of a problem or a greater understanding of a
phenomenon.

Rosario, Eden, Eniego and Lundang (2018) defined statistical mini research
as the output of data gathered through questionaire, interview, observation, and
experimentation from an identified set of samples.

They enumerated 5 steps in formulating a Statistical Mini Research

Steps in Formulating a Statistical Mini Research

Step 1. State the problem

Step 2. Design the Research

Step 3. Gather the Data

Step 4. Analyze the Data

Step 5. Summary, Conclusions, and

Recommendations

Step 1. State the problem

The following are some factors that you can consider when stating the
problem of your research.
a. Set the topic that you want to research on: This topic shoud be something that
interest you. It should also be timely or trending so that it would reach a
wider audience.
b. Identify if your research would be descriptive or inferential. Descriptive
statistics refers to the collection, presentation, characterization, and
summarization of data through numerical descriptions. Inferential statistics, on
the other hand, needs to have a conclusion about a large body of data
through a sample set.
c. Know where you can possibly source your data for this research. At this point,
you may consider setting limitations for your research, for example, you might
want to limit a certain time bracket and source it from a specific sample set.

6
d. State the hypohtesis. Hypothesis is a proposed explanation or answer to the
problem stated based on the limited data gathered at the beginning of the
research. Make sure that your hyphothesis is a set of sensible and sound
assumptions.

Step 2. Design the Research

The design is the blueprint of your statistical mini research. It provides the
procedures on how will you go about with your research. The research design
explains the data collection method and the statistical analysis plan in order to come
up with a reliable result and conclusion.
Below are some factors that you can consider when stating the problem of
your research.
a. Choose the subjects included in your sample set. Make sure that your
subjects could well represent the population that you would like to study.
b. Identify the possible variables for your research. A variable is an attribute
that can affect the result of your study. It can be qualitative or quantitative.
A quantitative variable consists of numerical data while qualitative data
refers to categorical responses.
c. Based on the limitations that you have identified earlier, set the control for
your research. This should define the range by which your research would
resolve into.

Step 3. Gather the Data

Data gathering is an important part of statistics. Data should be collected in a

manner that they are accurate and convenient to use. There are two types of data:
primary data and secondary data.
 Primary data is a type of data that is collected by researchers directly from
main sources through interviews, surveys, experiments, observations, etc.
 Secondary data is a data gathered from the studies, surveys, or experiments
that have been run by other people. Examples are encyclopedias, essays,
reviews and texbooks.
There are many ways and techniques that you can use when you gather
data. This is dependent on your research topic. They maybe gathered by using the
following methods:
 Observing the outcomes of events
 Conducting surveys
 Taking measurements in experiments
 Reading statistical publication

Data organization
A process organizing collected factual material commonly accepted in the
scientific community as necessary to validate research findings.
“Research data is data that is collected, observed, or created, for purposes of
analysis to produce original research results”(Boston University Libraries, n.d.a).

Why is data important in research?

1. Data are intended to represent facts and without proper preservation of the
context

7
of collection and interpretation, may become meaningless (Boston University
Libraries, n.d.a).
2. The collection of data and its analysis assists researchers with discovering
answers
to their research questions and hypotheses. In some cases, it even predicts future
outcomes (Office of Research Integrity, n.d.a).

Ways of organizing data in research

1. Frequency Distribution Table- a frequency table shows clear definite information
about a set of data.
Types of frequency distribution
A. Categorical/ ungroup
B. Group
2. Stem and Leaf Diagram- A method used to organize statistical data that helps us
to
see values according to their size, so we can order them accordingly. In a stem-
and-leaf diagram, each data value is split into a stem and a leaf. The leaf is the
last
digit to the right. The stem is the remaining digits to the left.
Example: The following data represents the Research test scores for the second
grading period (out of 100%): 88 97 95 87 89 90 99 87 85 88 92 94 83 98 76
Stems leaves
76
8357789
90245789

3. Chart- Graphs or charts condense large amounts of information into easy-to-

understand formats that clearly and effectively communicate important points.

Types of chart
a. Bar Chart
b. Pie Chart
c. Line Chart

Step 4. Analyze the Data

Data analysis is the heart of your research work. This is where all the data
that you gathered will be transformed into meaningful information. Statistics offer
different techniques to analyze a given data. For example if you would like to
compare one data from another, variance or standard deviation may be helpful and if
you are venturing in descriptive statistics, you may use the measures of central
tendencies. Measures of central tendency are statistical methods used to identify the
center of the distribution of the given set of data. Mean, median, and mode are
commonly used to locate the center of distribution of a given set of data.

Step 5. Summary, Conclusions, and Recommendations

8
The last step in formulating mini research wherein you have to organize the
findings of your data to be presented to your target audience. You can use statistical
tables, box plots, and graphs to better summarize and present your conclusion.
Check if your conclusion is similar with the hyphothesis. Generate recommendations
and suggestions for future researchers.

When starting a statistical mini research, ask the following questions to help
you state the problem.
 What do you want to know?
 Who are the target respondents?
 How are the participants selected?
 What is the time frame of your research?

Example:

 What do you want to know?

Impact of Social Media usage to the Academic Performance
 Who are the target respondents?
Grade 10 students of Pines City National High School
 How are the participants selected?
Random selection
 What is the time frame of your research?
School year 2020-2021

Hypothesis of your research

Problem: What is the Impact of Social Media usage to the academic performance
of randomly selected Grade 10 students of Pines City National High School school
year 2020-2021?

Null Hypothesis: Social Media usage contributes negatively to academic

performance.

Alternate Hypothesis: Social Media usage contributes positively to academic

performance

Research Design:

1. Conduct a survey among the randomly selected grade 10 students of Pines

City National High School in Baguio City for school year 2020-2021. This
survey should be able to ask the following:

10
 number of social media accounts
 most used social media
 hours spent in the most visited social media
 purpose of the usage of the accounts
 does the usage of social media enhance their learning skills
 does it contribute to their academic activities
2. From the school records, find the average of the respondents involved in
the study. Correlate it with the hours they spend in their most visited social
media per week.
3. Plot your results in a line graph. Identify whether or not there is a positive or
negative correlation between the usage of social media and their average.

City National High School Senior High S.Y. 2020-2021
I. Background of the study
Understanding statistics and probability is essential in the modern world,
where the print and electronic media are full of statistical information and
interpretation. The goal of mathematical instruction in this area should be to make
students sensible, critical users of probability and statistics, able to apply their
processes and principles to real-world problems. But many students think that the
subject is difficult and have low scores in the subject. The teacher needs to know
who these students are having trouble answering their modules and conduct
interventions that will help the students’ performance.
II. Statement of the problem
This research will help the researcher identify the performance in Statistics
and Probability of Grade 11 ABM students in Pines City National High School Year
2020-2021.
III. Significance of the study

quarter, because there are only small percent of the students who got failing grades
and most of the students got a passing grade.

The teacher will conduct intervention with the 14% of the students who failed
the Statisctics and Probability subject for the third quarter.

Characteristics of a Good Research Title

According to rhetoric scholars Harison and Keene, making a good title for a
paper involves ensuring that the title of the research accomplishes four goals.

1. A good title predicts the content of the research paper.

 A good title informs the reader accurately about the contents of the
article.
2. A good title should be interesting to the reader.
 To make the title interesting, attention-grabbing, and easy to read,
use words that create a positive impression and stimulate the
reader’s interest.
3. It should reflect the tone of the writing.
 It’s very important to define the tone of your research in the title and
keep it throughout the paper.

13
4. It should contain important keywords that will make it easier to be located
during a keyword search.
 Keywords are important words and concepts that are frequently
used in your research paper. Using them in the title will let you
introduce the topic, problem, or solution right away.

Tips for Constructing your Research Title

As you craft a title for your mini research paper, the following steps will help you
understand how you can go about writing a good title for your statistical mini
research.

1. Ask yourself these questions and take note of the answers. What does your
paper seek to answer and what does it accomplish. Try to answer these
questions as briefly as possible, with one or two sentences each.
a. What is my paper about?
b. What techniques/designs were used?
c. Who/what is studied
d. What were the results?
2. Identify and list keywords and phrases.
3. Create a sentence that includes the key words you listed.
4. Create a working title. To create a working title, remove elements that make it
a complete “sentence” but keep everything that is most important to what the
study is about.Delete all unnecessary/ repetitive words and link the remaining.
5. Eliminate all extra words or phrases to meet a suitable word count of at least
not more than 15 words ; place keywords at the beginning and end of your
title

Following the steps outlined above will help you arrive at a perfect title for your
research paper.
