Purpose The purpose of this report is to investigate an Israeli technology firm
called NSO Group which is primary known for its spyware
technology called Pegasus that is capable of remote surveillance of
smartphones
Method Pegasus was discovered on August 2016 after a failed installation
attempt on the phone of an Arab human rights activist Ahmed
Mansoor which led to an investigation revealing details about
the spyware, its abilities and the security vulnerabilities
Result Pegasus is capable of reading messages, tracking calls, collecting
passwords and location tracking. According to an Israeli
newspaper Haretz, the NSO group sold the spyware for millions
of dollars to countries like United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, India,
Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Mexican Drug cartels and other Gulf
countries.
Conclusion The spyware can be used for surveillance of anti-regime
activists, journalists and political leaders from rival nations with
encouragement and mediation from the Israeli government.
Recommendations The security of smartphones using Android and IOS should be
tightened and resolved. The NSO firm should be held responsible
for breach of privacy
