sentences A–E. There are two extra sentences.

Child genius

The world is fascinated by brilliant people. 1 ____ An

excellent example is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart,
who first played a difficult piece of music when he
was four.
But let’s go back to the beginning. His only sister was
Maria Anna. Their father began teaching them music
when they were very young. 2 ____ Her three-year-
old brother Wolfgang listened and watched. Soon,
the father was teaching Wolfgang too and the boy
learnt very quickly. In fact, he began writing music at
the age of five. Unbelievably, a year later, he and his
sister were performing for the kings and queens of
Europe. The children were considered to be musical
geniuses.
Wolfgang travelled throughout Europe with his
sister and father. Travelling in those days was long
and hard, especially for a young child. Sometimes
the family didn’t have enough money. 3 ____ It was
a very difficult time for the young musician. Sadly,
although he became successful as an adult, he died
poor. His wife had to sell some of his music.

A Maria Anna was seven when she began to play

the keyboard – a type of piano.
B Wolfgang showed more talent than his sister
Maria Anna.
C When their talent is known at a young age, we
are even more amazed.
D Mozart’s music was so beautiful that we still
enjoy it today.
E Frequently, one of them became ill and they
cancelled performances.
