What is helicopter parenting and free-range parenting? The first is


when parents are too controlling and involved in their children’s lives and
the second is the opposite, when parents give children (too much?)
freedom.

● try sth out - try sth to see if you like it, give it a chance
● pack sb off - force sb to go somewhere
● take over from sb/sth - take control
● keep sth up - continue doing a hobby/activity etc
● (keep up - to remain at the right level)
● keep an eye on sb/sth (idiom) - check that everything is ok - “Can
you please keep an eye on my cat while I’m on holiday?”

Complete the sentences with a phrasal verb in the right form:

Grammar review - Present tenses

Use the:

Present Simple for


● a regular action -I have Chinese class every Monday.
● a long-term situation - I live in Poggio al Pino
● for the future after some time expressions like as soon as, when,
before after e.g. Call me when you get home
● Timetables - Tomorrow’s class starts at 10
● Facts - Water boils at 100°C

Present Continuous for


● a changing situation e.g. fuel prices are rising day by day
● with always it indicates an annoying habit - e.g My flat is always
talking loudly when I want to study!
● a temporary situation e.g. I’m reading a great book! (not right now)
● something happening now e.g I’m sitting in class right now
● Future planned events - I’m leaving for Malta next weekend

*Will
● characteristic behaviour - The birds will sing early in the morning
outside my bedroom window

NB STATE verbs can never be in a continuous tense. They tend to be


verbs that express feelings, thoughts and opinions. They are not
ACTIONS.
Examples of State Verbs:
love, hate, think, understand, believe

⚠ Some verbs can be either a STATE or ACTION verb depending on


their meaning!

e.g. I have a dog = possession so STATE


I’m having a good time = ACTION

I see what you mean = thought so STATE


I’m seeing Tom later on = meet so ACTION

Lunch looks good! = opinion so STATE


I’m looking at holiday brochures = ACTION
