Nowadays more and more older people who need employment have to
compete with younger people for the same jobs

In recent years, there has been an increase in job competition between older
and younger people for the same openings. This essay will explore some of the
issues that have resulted from this trend and suggest some solutions.

To begin with, one of the most signi cant problems is that of technological
pro ciency across both generations. This is because the majority of today’s
companies rely on modern technology to run their operations, but it tends to be
that younger workers have grown up as digital natives, whereas older people are
often at a disadvantage due to their relative lack of technological experience.
This, for instance, is why young people are usually faster at typing. To minimise
this problem, workshops should be provided for older hires, which would reduce
the pro ciency gap and limit employment discrimination on the basis of age.

Furthermore, another concern to examine is that this generational con ict may
breed resentment across both sides of the divide. While those of the older
generation, who tend to be more experienced, may resent having to compete
with young people as it might feel undigni ed, those of the younger generation
might feel that they have to work harder than is fair to prove their worth.
Addressing this issue involves companies hiring an equal number of people from
both age groups and subsequently emphasising the strengths of each to one
another. This would ideally enable older workers to see the value of younger
ones and vice versa, thus mitigating resentment.

In conclusion, the dif culties with the erce competition among older and
younger people for the same positions are skill-based and societal. However,
these can be tackled via appropriate company policies concerning training and
diversity.
