Case Scenario 1
Shireen is a coordinator at a Charitable aged care support service. She is new to the job role of
coordinator but has had a wealth of experience in the aged care support industry. Shireen understands
how important it is to establish links with relevant community service organisations as quickly as possible
to be effective in her role.
Shireen is pro-active in her role and asks her colleagues during her first staff meeting about the network
meetings they have or may have attended over the last 18 months. After gathering information from
colleagues Shireen decides to contact her local council community development officer to see if she can
attend the monthly community services workers network. The local council community development
officer informs her that this network has a membership of approximately 38 organisations.
When Shireen attends the meeting, she introduces herself and what her current role is for the aged care
support service and lets the group know she is new and keen to meet up informally with the
organisations that make referrals to her aged care support service. During the meeting break time
Shireen reviews information about these relevant services online so that she is familiar with their
services and who the key people are in the service. After the meeting, several aged care workers
introduce themselves to Shireen, welcome her to the network and give provide her with their business
card details.
Shireen feels the attendance at the meeting was very productive and she makes sure that she keeps the
contact details in an accessible place for future use. Shireen makes phone contact with the aged care
social worker from the local community health service to have an informal get together over a cup of
coffee to discuss her role; the social worker also suggest Shireen view the ‘myagedcare’ website as new
changes have just been introduced about service delivery. Shireen believes that to get a good indication
of service availability for her client group she needs to talk to the relevant people such as; the social
worker who will be a vital contact to give an overview of the services provided by the local community
health service.
Shireen also contacts the council’s community development worker after the network monthly meeting
to request the contact detail list of key people from organisations within the network. She contacts
several of the aged care workers by email using opened ended questions to promote discussion and to
request a time for an informal meeting. Shireen needs to promote her aged care support services so she
takes her current organisation’s brochures to all her meetings. After each meeting Shireen defines and
documents the type and level of collaboration, and negotiation she requires with key people and
relevant services.
Shireen’s goal is to become an active member of the local aged care and community services networks as
she knows that this will benefit her organisation, her clients and herself in providing positive outcomes
and job satisfaction.
