BALLAD LICK 6
Martin says...

We’re going to conclude with another lick I was improvising off the cuff. Actually, the term
“improvising” may be debatable as I was just randomly stringing together several legato
patterns, that I pre-rehearsed in my practice sessions over months. I’m just mentioning this,
because as with Shuffle Lick 5, I wouldn’t be able to safely recreate this one note for note.
I can for sure play something extremely similar to it, the outcome is always a bit dependant
on my muscle memory, though.

My idea was to give you a few tricks to really build tension, by creating sheets of sound
with the legato technique. What I like about the use of legato in this context is that you have
this crazy amount of notes, yet due to it’s softer sounding nature, the intensity level isn’t as
exaggerated as if I picked all of the notes.

During the very last bit in this, I played a very simple 3-note-per-string legato scale pattern.
However I really dislike doing these the conventional way, using 3 fingers on the left hand
and picking each first note on a new string. It always sounds “very 3-note-per-string-y”,
meaning that the first note on a string always stands out in a bit of a negative way (both
due to being picked and the different sonic characteristics of each string). To avoid that I
replaced one note by tapping with the middle finger of my right hand. The result is a more
fluid, even sounding run through the scale.

Of course you can use any of those patterns in many different harmonic and stylistic
scenarios. Oh, and they happen to be nice chop builders, too! Make sure though, you have
an even articulation, meaning all the notes ring out nicely and blend in well, wether you
pick, pull, hammer or slide into them.
