FOOD INSECURITY IN COLOMBIA

Bermudez Gomez Laura Alejandra, Torres Lopez Samuel Alejandro

In Colombia, food insecurity is related to HUNGER, MALNUTRITION AND POVERTY that

the population lives; in this report, we will discuss how to mitigate this social problem, through
community gardens, suburban farms and collaborations between home garden vegetables and
local food banks can help solve us the access to food that the country is experiencing.
it is important to understand how community gardens, suburban farms and collaborations
between home gardens and local food banks help to reduce HUNGER, MALNUTRITION AND
POVERTY in Colombian society and how this relates to food insecurity. Hunger is scientifically
understood as food deprivation. In simple terms, all those who suffer from hunger, suffer from
food insecurity, but not all those affected by food insecurity suffer from hunger, as their other
causes of food insecurity, including insufficient intake of micronutrients. Malnutrition is the
result of deficiencies, excesses, or imbalances in macro- or micronutrient intake. Malnutrition
can be a consequence of food insecurity. While poverty is certainly a cause of hunger, the lack of
sufficient and adequate nutrition is, in turn, one of the underlying causes of poverty.
To change this, a proposal has been developed so that, in conjunction with the collaboration of
state entities, a better quality of life can be provided for the people with limited resources who
cannot have a proper and dignified diet, affecting their health.
The proposal is based on the creation of community orchards and suburban farms. The function
is based in the self-supply of the families to have a firm production of various foods such as
fruits, vegetables, legumes, etc. that guarantee a healthy diet. Usually, the people that suffer this
problem are found in rural areas, so, by asking for their authorization, the government could
allocate part of these lands to farm projects. These people would also be given indications about
how the different crops to be used for food production should be treated, so that, progressively
and in an orderly manner, a local food bank could even be created.
Finally, it can be concluded that if the people work in an organized form and help each other,
their quality of life and their healt could be changed for the better. Also, if progressively more
types of food are grown and harvested, poverty, hunger and malnutrition can be combated by
ensuring food security.

good morning teacher,

Basically what we did was to address the issue of food insecurity from 3 aspects that cause it:
hunger, poverty and malnutrition in Colombia.
According to these 3 aspects each one was defined, hunger is understood as the lack of food,
poverty as the lack of opportunities and everyone who suffers from hunger, will have
malnutrition, to solve this we talked about community gardens and food banks mainly.
the community gardens could be made by the people in their homes and have their own
healthy food, and then they could start to create something bigger like community food banks
and thus mitigate food insecurity.
