STATISTICS ON FILIPINOS WHO GO ABROAD

ABSTRACT

Migration has become a common demographic response of Filipinos to


various socio-economic problems. In the light of the severe economic crisis
that has confronted the country in recent years, the Philippines has become
a major source for international migrants and become one of the largest
sending countries of labor to various countries in the world. The Filipino
workers, both women and men, leave the country in order to earn a
sustainable income, a condition that is difficult or inadequate in their own
country.

In this study, the researcher has gathered reliable data to present the
statistics on Filipino who travel overseas. The statistics included in this
report cover the period from 2016 to 2022.

STATISTICS DATA

2016 Survey on Overseas Filipinos

The numbers of Overseas Filipino Worker (OFWs) who worked abroad at


anytime during period April to September 2016 was estimated at 2.2
million. Of these total OFW, those with existing work contract compromised
97.5 percent and the rest worked overseas without contract.
2017 Survey on Overseas Filipinos

The numbers of Overseas Filipino Worker (OFWs) who worked abroad at


anytime during period April to September 2017 was estimated at 2.3
million. Overseas Contract Workers (OCWs) or those with existing work
contract comprised 97.0 percent of the total OFWs during the period April
to September 2017. The rest (3.0%) worked overseas without contract.

2018 Survey on Overseas Filipinos

The number of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who worked abroad at


anytime during the period April to September 2018 was estimated at 2.3
million. Overseas Contract Workers (OCWs) with existing work contract
comprised 96.2 percent of the total OFWs during the period April to
September 2018. The rest (3.8%) worked overseas without contract.
2019 and 2020 Survey on Overseas Filipinos

The number of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who worked


abroad during the period of April to September 2020 was
estimated at 1.77 million. Overseas Contract Workers (OCWs) or
those with existing work contracts comprised 96.4 percent or
equivalent to 1.71 million of the total OFWs during the same
period
