PPU Characteristics:

 Used for planning speaking lessons.


 The main objective is production and fluency.
 Provides structured and non-structured opportunities to use new language.
 It goes through a process of becoming aware, developing accuracy and
finally achieving automaticity.
 Focuses on a target language structure, such as grammar, vocabulary,
pronunciation or a conversation strategy.
PDP Characteristics:
 Used for planning reading and listening lessons.
 The main objective is comprehension.
 Provides multiple purposeful interactions with a text.
 It goes through a process of getting general and then more specific
information from a text.
 Its main is focus is students demonstrating that they have understood a text
which would normally be challenging for them.
PDP Criteria Checklist
Pre Activities:
 Activate prior knowledge on the topic.
 Provides background and situation related to the text.
 Pre-teach or introduce key vocabulary and language structures
related to the text.
During Activities:
 Provide multiple opportunities for students to interact with the
text.
 Has an interactive task that requires some kind of response from
Ss for each listening or reading.
 Has tasks that move from general to specific understanding.
 Allows time for Ss to check comprehension, ask questions, clarify
vocabulary and move toward deeper understanding of the text.
Post Activities:
 Requires students to be creative and to expand on the text or
personalize the topic using other skills.
 Allows students to reinforce the new vocabulary words/language
structure using other productive skills (speaking or writing).
Preparing a PDP Lesson
1. Find and examine the text, and determine if there are
any words you want to pre-teach. Sometimes, making a
graphic organizer for yourself could help you organize
the text and think of activities for the during stage.
2. Think of the last activity for the during stage.
3. Brainstorm and choose a number of tasks (normally 3-
4) for the during stage and assign a task before each
listening.
4. Write the SWBAT focusing on the last task of the during
stage, it can be enriched with the activity form the post.
5. Find an activity or activities for the pre stage.
6. Find an activity for the post keeping in mind that it’s an
extension of the lesson.
PDP Lesson Objectives
At the end of the lesson, students will
