Introduction:
Scientific data most often is best presented using graphs. In this activity you present data
from motion study by creating your own graphs. You will also analyze and obtain
additional information from the graphs
Learning Objectives:
Materials:
Experiment
An experiment in electricity measures the electric current and voltage across a resistor.
The results are presented below.
Current Voltage
(Amperes) (Volts)
0.01 0.48
0.03 0.95
0.04 1.43
0.06 1.92
0.07 2.39
0.08 2.86
2. Determine the y-intercept from your graph. Write an equation for your line using the y
= mx + b form, replacing the "y" with a “V “ for volts and the “x” with an "I " for current..
(5 pts)
V = 31.67 I + b
C. Questions:
1. From your graph, describe in words how the variables are related. (5 pts)
The graph used to show the relationship between the variables indicates that the
electric current along the x-axis is the independent variable, while the voltage along the
y-axis is the dependent variable. As the current of electricity rises, the voltage across a
resistor rises as well. However, it can be seen through the graph that the line of best fit
does not pass through all the data points. Despite this, the data points express a linear
relationship given by the equation V = 31.67 I + 0.1633. This suggests that they exhibit
the same direct trend, showing that the two variables are directly proportional to each
other but do not have an exact proportional relationship.
2. When the current I = 0.05 A, what is the voltage? Obtain an estimated value using
the graph. Compare this with what your equation gives. (5 pts)
𝑉 = 1. 747V
3. When the voltage V = 5.0 V, what is the current? Show your solution. (5 pts).
Solution:
5. 0 = 31. 67 𝐼 + 0. 1633
4. 8367 = 31. 67 𝐼
4. 8367/31. 67 = 𝐼
𝐼 = 0. 15 𝐴
