The Creative Writing Unit

● This unit will focus on building creative writing skills.

● We will explore Sonya Hartnett’s novel ‘The Midnight Zoo’ as
a mentor text, learning from her creative writing.
● We will use ‘TMZ’ & other texts to develop an understanding
of the diverse ways that vocabulary, text structures,
language features & ideas can interweave to craft
compelling texts.
● The CAT in roughly Week 6 will be a written creative short
story. You will draft it, receive feedback & refine it.
What is “Anthropomorphism”?
“Anthropomorphism” is the attribution of human traits, emotions,
or intentions to non-human entities (e.g. animals, objects).

When you describe a gloomy room as “sad”, that’s anthropomorphism.

When I give my dog a silly voice, that’s anthropomorphism.

When Sonya Hartnett creates zoo-full of animals,

each with a unique voice, personality & set of
intentions, that’s anthropomorphism.
